Chef Mavro is similar to Alan Wong's with one glaring difference - it is pricey to the max. Definitely not a place for local guys or people who want to be full after spending $350+ for dinner for two. The portions parallel what many think of regarding fine-dining French cuisine. The one thing Chef Mavro has going, though, is that Jack-In-The-Box is right across the street so hopefully you'll have enough money after dinner to fill yourself up.
Chef Mavro is a dining experience. Great service and the food is outstanding. If you want to have a memorable fine dining meal on your visit to Honolulu, make this the place. You need to go for the 6 course meal with wine pairings.
The prices compare to any other fine dining restaurant in any other city and this is worth it. Treat yourself right. I had just gotten engaged the night before and we wanted a special meal. Once the staff found out about our engagement, the staff bent over backwards to in every way to make this a great night. Even Chef Mavro himself came to our table to to serve one of the courses.
It is about a 5 minute drive from Waikiki.
Very nice meal, if not a bit pricey. I found this restaurant in the Zagat Guide while my wife and I were honeymooning at the Kahala Mandarin. I do remember incredible an seared ahi appetizer as well as some creative desserts. The service was as you'd expect in an upscale restaurant, very attentive and friendly. If we are in Oahu again, we'll definitely go back for a meal.
