An unattentive, obnoxious waiter who had no right to tag on any gratuity at all. A bill over $400 with friends. A missed show next door. The service couldn't have been worse. Sad to have see Phillippe's food be party to it, but even that wasn't special enough this time to boost this rating. There is too much going on in Portland to do this again. I've had 3 misses in a row.
Speaking of Heathman's misses, I will be also be looking for ideas on where to have Tea during the holidays this year. Turning tables quickly and shoving customers out after they've collected on their overpriced tea is not in the leisurely royal tradition now, is it? My 6 year old was charged the same as I was. There have got to be other options, even though one of the quaintest (Rose's Tea House in Gresham) has now closed.
Along with Paley's Place, the Heathman is one of the two highest rated restaurants in Portland according to some guides, like the Gayot.
Not long after eating at Paley's and not having been very impressed, I had hoped to eat at The Heathman and have my disappointment assuaged.
The dining area is attractive and would be appealing to diners who are looking for atmosphere.
The menu is an intruiging read. One looks at it and wonders how one can manage to sample all the offerings that look as though they would be unique and delicious.
We made our choices. My dinner partner likes escargots. He ordered that and was appaled that it not only wasn't hot enough, it also didn't taste good enough. I forgot what I ordered for an entree, some kind of sweetbreads, but it was unimpressive. The octopus salad was ok.
The waiter was a young attractive boy, who was actually unable to adequately advise me in my choice of wine. He recommended a $75.00 bottle of white that didn't please me, but before we got that far he said at one point, "I don't have time to spend here I've got other tables to serve."
He seemed to have time to uncorked the red wine, and hover over the diner a few tables away however.
Common here in Portland too, is the situation, as in this case, where the dining room is still half full and not that busy seemingly, and yet the wait personnel seem unable to keep up. I can only guess that waiting on customers takes away from their chit chat time with oneanother about their personal endeavors.
Overall it was a very annoying experience, all the more so having paid $225.00 for two persons. At least I was able to take the rest of that poor recommended wine home and use it for cooking.
