| About: | This authentic German restaurant offers tasty food and steins that are big. Choose from any one of the entrees and get sausage, chicken, pork or veal in a hearty dish. The vegetarian meals are also good. Either way, it is a warm shelter from the sometimes offensive cold rain of Portland. The friendly, singing faces inside are accompanied by accordion players. Offer a request or two and sing along. Stop in the adjacent Gustav's Bier Stube if you wish to extend the evening a bit further. |

My husband and I took family that was visiting from San Francisco to eat at Rheinlander's on Thanksgiving. Our service was impeccable and our food was fantastic. I don't know how authentic it is compared to eating in Germany, but we thought the sauerkraut and meats were yummy, as well as the fondue and soups. Although we opted for the German-American Thanksgiving dinner and got soup, salad, turkey, mashed potatoes, and other American classics, we had a taste of German cuisine and definitely sampled a variety of bier - The staff was fun and friendly, playing the accordion and getting everyone in our dining area to sing along. We would highly recommend this place.
I've been to Germany and have a German boyfriend, and we both agree that the food is nothing like an "authentic german meal" as well as the atmosphere being an "authentic german restaurant". I wasn't impressed with their americanized german menu and lack-there-of. I've also talked to other german nationals who count this as a thumbs down "authentic" german restaurant. Not to mention their food is WAY over priced for what you receive. I say it's a sure miss.
Can't believe the last comment...my boyfriend and I dine here regularly. We love to stop in and have an appetizer and pint of beir. Always love the servers, food is excellent, attentive service from a solid crew ! Thanks and looking forward to more fondue and sausage !
