there does seem to be a service problem...getting the check is sometimes more time consuming than the meal itself.
I'm boycotting McMenamins: This is the worst service in town. Maybe it's because service staff split tips equally. But there is no excuse for the poor service. Every place seems understaffed. It's consistently bad from place to place, but my worst experiences were at Edgefield where my group was told we'd have a table in twenty minutes. We were told that every twenty minutes for an hour and half when they finally said the kitchen was backed up and food orders would take 45 minutes. So we left. Since then, I have boycotted McMenamins. There are far better places to go in town like Laurelwood.
The beer seqlection and quality isn't that great, either, especially when compared to any of the dozens of microbrews in Portland. They usually don't have a pale ale, and if you can find an IPA, it usually tastes unfinished or too malty. The Ruby is foo foo. Fruit and beer don't mix in my opinion.
The food is overpriced. $10 for a distiller salad at Kennedy School? Where are we, New York?
Yes, the atmosphere is great, but you can't eat or drink atmosphere, and you'll sure have lots of time to enjoy the atmosphere while you wait and wait and wait for your server to come back with your food or drinks. Did she forget about you? Did he go on break? Who knows?
wonderful atmosphere mediocre food: I love the mcmenamins because of what they do to old spaces, but their food is very poor pub food. And the pizza is not worth eating.
