I give this place 5 stars for certain characteristics. It's basically a tourist attraction. They even advertise on the sides of buses. It's very popular and gets excessively busy.
The decor is wonderful. It has a warm and enjoyable atmosphere.
As mentioned by others, it has the outstanding Optimator vom Fass, one of the best German beers obtainable in the US.
The fondue is also quite good. The other culinary offerings can be good or interesting although nothing exceptional.
Most of the time the average service personnel are way above the Portland average. There is a waiter named Hal who is the best waiter in Portland! Unfortunately it's difficult to get a table where he's serving. -

Great If You're Not In A Hurry!: I have lived within walking distance of Rheinlander all my life, and Rheinlander/Gustav's food quality has never faltered. I miss the Sunday Brunch!!!!! It was THE BEST in town, I wish you would reopen the ORIGINAL Rheinlander Bar! Only issue with Gustav's is the service at lunch hour, more than not, have sat for 15 - 20 min, before being aknowledged, lucky the food is worth it!
