these people have no heart they just care about them selves. I bought an A/C for my home and I asked them for advice on which one worked best for my Sq Ft and they recommended the 9000btu, according to them it would cover 550sq ft. they lied to me just to make the money, bought it for $500 and took it home did not even cool my living room which is 445 sq ft. called ankeny back and he just didnt care and he said he was not able to do anything for us. He said for us to call the factory for help, this was the next day after buying it. well we called the factory and they told us we got miss led by ankeny the 9000btu only covers 300 sq ft. ankeny screwed us over I will not shop their again. all he would say is it is not his problem. $500 down the drain.

Norman at Ankeny Hardware - 08/02/09
I am the person who waited on Cristina when she and her husband came into Ankeny Hardware to purchase their air conditioner and also the person who spent over an hour on Thursday with Cristina and her partner trying to satisfy them, despite being yelled at and threatened. Since Cristina threatened to try to ruin mt store's reputation by doing a posting such as the above, I wish to fully explain to all who read her complaint with the facts for this situation. Cristina came into Ankeny Hardware earlier this week to purchase a portable air conditioner. As Ankeny Hardware was one of the few stores in the Portland metro area that had any air conditioners to sell, the line was very long and some customers had to wait for an unusually long time to be personally waited on. I remember customers whose behavior and questions are especially challenging...and Cristina was one of those people. When it was Cristina's turn to be served, she immediately and loudly complained about having to wait two hours in line. I explained to her that normally our service is much quicker, but due to the weather and high demand for a/c and fans, there had been a large backlog of customers to serve. Cristina still seemed agitated, which I assumed was due to the heat (our store's own air conditioner had broken down the previous day and it was about 90 inside). Cristina's wanted a portable air conditioner. When she explained her requirements and the manner in which it would be used, I told her that the largest model in stock ( a 9,000 btu) may not work for her needs, but it was the best available at this time. I mentioned that it should do up to approx 400-500 sq feet and that I had personally used the same model in one of the Ankeny offices (about 500 sq feet) and it worked okay. Cristina wanted a "guarantee" that it would work in her situation, which I could not give. I even recommended that if she had doubts, she shouldn't purchase it. Cristina decided to purchase the portable a/c. I explained to her that any warranty issues are handled by the manufacturer, which was Haier and that all air conditioner sales are final...in other words, Ankeny Hardware does not take returns on a/c. (Just a F.Y.I...the reason Ankeny Hardware does not take back a/c is that s surprisingly high amount of those who purchase them wait until the heat-wave subsides and then try to return them saying they were unhappy with the unit...in other words, they want to "use it for free" for a few days and then get their money back. As a small business, Ankeny Hardware can't afford such behavior). There is a sign behind the sales counter prominently displayed stating this. The sales invoice (which Cristina signed) also mentions the warranty issue and the return policy next to the customer's signature. Cristina and her partner called a day or two after purchasing the a/c to explain the a/c wasn't cooling quick enough for them. I tried to explain that there possibly was a mis-installation issue or the remote control was not set properly. (From installing the same model a day earlier, I discovered it was very easy to accidentally have the remote on the "fan" setting instead of "cool". All she / her partner did was yell at me that I sold them "a piece of junk", "lied" to them, and demaned their money back. I suggested they first call the Haier factory to see if there was a warranty issue. Haier offered to schedule a free service call for them to inspect (and repair if necessary) the a/c, but Cristina demanded it be done that same or next day which was impossible for the local Haier service company due to the heat-wave. Cristina and her partner came into Ankeny Hardware on Thursday, made a disruptive scene at the sales counter, and demanded that Ankeny Hardware refund their a/c purchase. I re-explained the return and warranty guidelines they had signed and agreed to when they purchased the a/c unit. I also explained to them that they possibly had not allowed enough time for the a/c unit to effectively cool their area, especially when they should remember from the day they purchased the a/c unit, that their room's square foot requirements and ceiling height were possibly over-taxing the unit. I suggested that they test the temp of the cool air coming out of the a/c...if a thermometer showed the air blowing into the room was approx 55 degrees, the unit was properly working. (Due to the very high humidity levels along with ongoing 100 degree temps, many rooms needed up to 48 hours to initially be brought down from an inside temp of 90 or so to a more comformatble 75.) I offered to contact Haier myself, told them it would take about 30 to 60 minutes and offered to personally buy their lunch if they wanted to wait at a nearby restaurant while I contacted the Haier factory distribution center. They refused the offer and both left the store, but not before threatening that they would file a posting on the web "ruining" Ankeny Hardware, call the BBB to file a complaint and tell everyone they could how "dishonest Ankeny Hardware is". They later contacted me and I offered them another solution: There was exactly one of the 9,000 btu air conditioner's left in stock. If they agreed, Ankeny Hardware would sell them a new unit, send back the unit they felt was defective (though unknown if it really was)and if Haier agreed it was defective, would credit their account. All this would be written on the new sales invoice so they would be protected. They refused the offer. In conclusion, Ankeny Hardware went way beyond what was necessary to try to satisfy Cristina. Their a/c unit may not have even been defective, but just laboring due to the high heat and humidty. Ankeny Hardware had been in business for 100 years and owned by my family for the past 61 years. Ankeny Hardware would not be able to stay in business if they operated in a dishonest manner. I invite you to read many other web postings that are very complimentary. Ankeny Hardware also has a clean record with the Better Business Bureau. Unlike Cristina, I have no problem displaying my full name, phone number and e-mail address. Anyone is welcome to contact me to personally discuss this or any similar situation with me. anything and everything: this place has it all! plus great advice on everything. they stand by what they sell, and will more than make it right if you have any problems. not like the big box places at all!
