| About: | Sure, you could order online from this store, but you would miss seeing the largest independent bookstore in the United States. With 1.5 million books in 3,500 different sections, this shop covers a city block and offers new, used, rare and out-of-print books. Open every day of the year, this is the place many Portlanders consider their spiritual home. Many come to browse, get out of the rain, drink coffee in the coffee shop and pontificate. Authors read their works several evenings a week. |

Years ago Powell's was what they currently advertise. Within the last few years this place has become the typical corporate scandal. I have made many purchases from these individuals and while visiting is still fine (although last year I place a 300.00 order, receipt and all, but was lost by powells), placing an order over the internet or phone is a joke. DO NOT pay for shipping. You will receive the package within four business days plus regardless of where you live- including Portland! You will not receive your package on time, if at all. STUDENTS: You will not save a dime going here and DO NOT rely on their time frames!!!
I can see why the tourism brochure I had listed this store. I really enjoyed the few hours I spent browsing there (and I still hadn't enough time to see the whole place). I really enjoyed it and the next time I come to Portland, it's going to be one of my first stops.
I recommend their various used books area.
Good Old Powells: Powell's has a huge selection of books. However, I find they are often lacking in specific titles. If you want to browse, there is nowhere better. If you're looking for a specific title, I've found they're no better than Borders or a similar store. They do have a vast selection of used titles, but again these are even less frequently what you're looking for than the new. Their used prices aren't particularly competitive, however they do pay very well for used books.
