| About: | Named for its founder, who was told he was crazy to put a Greek deli in the outskirts of Portland, Mad Greek Deli caters to a special taste. Located near Portland Community College's Rock Creek campus and the business and shopping districts of Hillsboro and Beaverton, the deli is popular among blue and white-collar workers. The Gyros Plate comes with two pieces of pita, veggies and feta cheese. Try the roasted chicken, lasagna, burgers, sandwiches and Greek fries. There are a few small tables inside, and the deli also includes a market. The restaurant offers delivery, catering, carryout wines, imported beers and Greek coffee. |

This place is what a deli is all about! They have live music most every weekend and wine tastings in the summer time. I follow them on Facebook to see when they are having giveaways/contests and to see which band is playing that week.
Props to the "mom and pop" shop. we just don't have enough of these types of places these days. Do you want to eat your food at a processed plant like 'Gyro-Gyro' or 'Daphnes' in a mall , or at a place that is actually Greek owned and operated? This palce has tradition and has been in the area with its recipes for a long time passed on from generation to generation. Its hard to survive in the restaurant business and with the way this place does its food its easy to see why they have survived the best and worst of times.
When you go here you will see the same faces and they will remember you. I haven't grown up at this deli but have been going the last 6-7 years. I find myself craving the Greek Fries and their unique texture and flavor. The people that complain about this place need to remember that they are going into a "DELI"... A DELI FOLKS. Relax, slow down and enjoy life for a few minutes, chill out and enjoy the food. If you dont like it leave it to the people that actually enjoy good old fashioned GREEK food and spend your time at Elephants counting your money and starring at your Mercedes. If it seems spendy (which I disagree with) its because it isnt a bunch of crap and its made from scratch.
The best way to sum it up is that its a Deli with a great wine bar in the back with a great wine selection with great Greek food.
Do: try the Mad Chicken and the Greek Fries... (everything else is good but everyone has a favorite)
Do: Make sure to go to the back and check out the walk in beer cooler and the new wine bar.
Do: Introduce yourself to the owner (pondo) who is really nice.
Dont: Call the greek fries Jo-Jo's.
I have much respect for these people. In the midst of suburban sprawl and disgusting "new homes" and deforestation there is this thirty-two-year-old family-owned Greek deli/pub in a modest, older building. The food was delicious and high quality. There is a large selection of dishes. My only complaint is this: Although I liked the food, it most definitely didn't like me! Haha, I'll be honest. But it was definitely worth it! Too bad I don't live near here, I'd go here as often as possible.
I live in Bend now, and can't stop thinking about the Gyros and Fries. My mouth is just watering writing this. They are to DIE for. I laughed like heck about the "sandwich nazi" remark above. I forget his name, but he's really very nice once you go there a few dozen times like I did when I lived nearby. I'd get the to-go Gyros special and sit at the golf course at the top of the hill and just munch. I also order extra greek fries and that sauce... OMG it's good. One of my favorite meals ever.
