| About: | This newer restaurant has replaced Laslow's Broadway Bistro, and its popularity is already evident. The upscale dining room boasts fine linens and a genuine Thai decor. As with most Portland Thai establishments, the curries are done to perfection here and make a wonderful accompaniment to all the meat and vegetable dishes that dominate the menu. If you are new to this food and not sure whether to go spicy or sweet, ask for a recommendation from your knowledgeable server. Wine and beer are available. |

I decided to give Sweet Basil another chance tonight (11/7/2008) after a highly disappointing encounter ~2 yrs ago. Well, I hate to say it, but still pretty diasappointed. The Pa Nang curry with shrimp that I ordered 'mild' was almost too spicy to eat and it was bitter on top of that. The shrimp were good though - often they are a bit 'fishy' in various Thai restaurants. I consider Pad Thai the 'gold standard' by which any Thai restaurant should be judged. Well, I am pretty disappointed here: it was anemic in color and the flavor was blah. The chicken pieces were cold and were obviously just tossed into dish at the end as the meat option. If you want a Thai meal nearby that is far superior to this, I would visit Tuk Tuk up on Fremont Ave or Cha Ba Thai at the top of Sandy Blvd. In over two years of dining regularly at these two establishments, I have never been disappointed. On Alberta St, Thai Noon is also good, but can be a bit of a scene and is often crowded - not good with a couple youngsters in tow. For artsy Thai-American cuisine, try Siam Society, also on Alberta. It is a romantic spot for a date (I would never bring my kids there...) and is a bit pricey compared to the others. That is it. I won't be returning. For a strange Sweet Basil experience of mine, read on:
I traveled to PDX by myself as a visitor 3 yrs ago, seeing if PDX was 'the spot' for me to move with my family. I ended up in their basement "Basil Bar" on the night of the opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in SLC. I remember eating a plate of red-hot and delicious Pad Thai in front of the big screen TV watching George W Bush play cowboy in the crowd of U.S. Olympians. My how things went downhill after that night - both for W and the quality of food at Sweet Basil.
I live in the neighborhood and I love this place! Great pad thai and nice bar too!!
Best Thai in Portland: Highly recommended if you like good Thai and good service
