When my roommate and I were first looking for an apartment a few years ago, we felt like we'd stumbled upon a good setup with Rental Services. The location was great, the rent was cheaper than anything else, and the place was livable and possibly even cool. We kept to ourselves and paid rent like clockwork, kept our apartment clean and were model renters. However, this apparently does not make any sort of difference whatsoever. We've been consistently treated rudely by staff and manager over some very simple matters and every complex one. You wouldn't believe the amount of miscommunication that happens in that office, things are never explained properly or policies are contradicted when multiple staff members are involved.
When we tried to resign our lease the first time, they told us that it wasn't ready to sign, they hadn't drawn them up. So we waited for them to prepare our lease and asked about every two weeks if we could resign. We waited three months before we could actually get the papers taken care of. This year they told us that because -we signed it so late-, our lease wouldn't end until the end of July and we'd have to pay for rent over the summer while my roommate and I WEREN'T USING THE APARTMENT. Breaking the lease meant paying for all of the months rent you have yet to pay as well-- which means either way, we'd be paying months of rent for an apartment we don't use.
Want a more specific example of their faulty service? Due to the cheap nature of the apartment and the location, my roommate and I have decided to put up with Rental Services for just a little longer and decided to resign the lease for this upcoming school year. We both live out of town during the summer and are very busy with our jobs and such. She drove three hours from Coos Bay to Monmouth in order to resign this lease. They told her that they were -too busy- to do it. My roommate told me they were making phone calls about relatively unimportant matters. We've resigned leases before and know what to do-- it needs no supervision for one to sign and initial here and there! They refused to let her sign the lease and said, "We could have mailed it to you..."
They didn't tell me that when I asked about us coming there to sign it.
"Can you just mail it then?" asked my roommate, very frustrated.
"Oh, no, not until you clean your carpets."
This was the first time we'd heard about this, and also apparently impossible to sign this lease anyway without getting the carpets cleaned, so maybe they shouldn't have told us to come sign by August 1st! Argh!
My roommate then told them how she wouldn't have time to come back and do this again and asked if there was another deadline to watch out for. They said no, take your time. So my roommate points out that she'll be back to stay next month, in September, because of school. Could she sign the lease on September 1st (which is well before school starts)? "Oh no no, that's too long, that's too late!" Essentially, we have no idea.
Rental Services is the worst example of business behavior I've ever seen. Consistent miscommunication between renters and RSI, consistent miscommunication between RSI and other businesses (like window installers), consistent rude and inconsiderate treatment of the people who are giving them large amounts of money every month. We can't decide if this is due to ignorance, laziness, or bad company policies. Maybe it's a mixture of everything.
We wouldn't recommend Rental Services to our enemies, because they ARE Rental Services. Avoid if at all possible.
When you look for a rental property, the staff appears very pleasant and efficient. I was even offered a way to avoid paying the huge ending cleaning costs, when the staff member told me she would give me you to "a list of companies that we use that comes out way cheaper". (Side note: The actual landlord of the property is a dream! Helpful, considerate and a fix-it guy!)
When I went in to give 30 days notice (at the end of my lease period)the staff was beyond rude and very condescending! A staff member raised her voice at me when I asked about what final cleaning I was responsible for (just to be sure that I was indeed responsible for carpets and such...no sense in paying for it if they were going to re-do it anyway, right?)... I asked in a very kind manner, just making sure we were all on the same page.
BTW, the companies she referred me to will not allow a non-homeowner to have their windows cleaned. They were jsut as rude as RSI and repeated told me that only homeowners can have their windows cleaned, or rental agencies. What is THAT about?!? Sounds like a scam operation to me!
Additionally, the staff has been very accusatory to my neighbors that happen to be responsible college students. They were falsely accused of housing someone in a garage, when that is not the case. They were 'giving a warning' for having a rolled up hose in front of their front spiggot and a tidy garbage can by their garage. My neighbors were never a problem! I am a homeowner that happens to have rented from RSI and I would not recommend this company to Cruella DeVille! Businesses in the area prefer to avoid them at all costs. I can see why! Rent from somewhere else, if you can! Monmouth is small, but nobody should have to endure this company...and I am not one to speak evil of others...I just feel a responsibility to "warn my neighbor".
