Key is one of the mainline banks that does not credit your account for a deposit on the day that it is made. It does however debit checks, atm withdrawals, fees and other charges against your account the instant they occur. This means that you may be charged a whopping $36.50 per item for being "overdrawn" even if you have deposited your paycheck with enough funds to cover your check at the grocery store or atm withdrawal made that night. The way they determine how much you are overdrawn, or how many items (times to charge penalty) is to first deduct the LARGEST item you wrote that day first, so that the smaller items (e.g. $3 for a latte) will also incur a penalty. They are trying to make up losses they incurred by making poor loans on the backs of their patrons.

Tip - if you want to avoid these outrageous penalties, do your deposits in cash.

Better yet, find a bank without this policy, which means avoiding almost all large, national banks. Do business locally.

Or you should just look into direct deposit like the rest of the world and quit the whinning. Nobody reads the disclosures anymore and everybody plays victim.. Large amount or not, the account went negative!
