If you like looking at lots of plants and trees then this is the park for you. If you like seeing rare and exotic animals then stay home and watch Planet Earth.
For a major city zoo Woodland Park is one of the worst. They spend so much time and money making the exhibits "realistic" to the animals that you probably won't see any of them. I traveled around the huge elephant exhibit for 20 minutes before breifly catching a glimpse of one over the heads of the crowd. Want to see a lion? Well I hope you brought your binaculars because the nearest view point to them is about 50 yards away. Come to see the bears? I hope you have x-ray vision so that you can see them thru all the rock and dirt that they like to lay on the other side of.
Honestly, I've been to better zoos in smaller cities. Parks where the animals are actually visible.
Woodland Park Zoo: This award-winning zoo is a must-see for animal lovers. Only minutes from busy downtown.
Nice zoo, but nothing special: I am from San Francisco, and used to that very spacious zoo. Woodland Park was a nice zoo with excellent exhibits. However, the zoo is laid out very badly. It's too cramped to walk through the narrow pathways between exhibits, and there's even less room AT the exhibits. If you have a stroller or a wagon and you want to maneuver your child up close to see the animals, forget it. There's just not enough room. Also, none of the exhibits are child-friendly in terms of viewing. Even the outside pens have foliage in front of them that goes a good 3.5 to 4 feet high. Kids just can't see over it. Also, the food selection was pretty bad, but again, I'm used to the SF Zoo which offers a lot of healthy food choices for its guests (must be a CA lifestyle kind of thing). It was a nice visit for my child, but I didn't enjoy myself as much as I have at other zoos.
