| About: | Thai Tom is a favorite of students of the University of Washington just a block away. Throughout the day, Thai Tom is bustling and packed to the gills with college kids, so be prepared to wait at least a few minutes for a table. Once you're seated in the shabbily decorated restaurant, you'll find the menu to be typical Thai fare: phad Thai, curries, noodle soups, and stir-fried dishes. The service is quick and the food is fairly average, but be awaretheir star system for the spiciness level is high, so order one and a half stars if you usually request two. - Katie Kinney |

Thai Tom is a pretty crowded/intimate Thai restaurant with quick but unfriendly service. There is ALWAYS a 15-30 minute wait to get in the door since the place is so small and relatively popular due to large meal portions and low prices (although these have recently gone up about 25%!). The food is above average, fresh ingredients, quick cooking, and if you get a bar seat, you are treated to watching the chefs cook and the fire and dazzle as different ingredients hit the propane stove. The surroundings have a tapestry and elephant head overlooking the bar, where the action takes place. The music is sometimes reggae, sometimes techno.
I've had good and bad experiences here. Unfortunately the popularity of this little restaurant has produced a fascist regime that some customers need to decide if they want to take or leave. When I was seated yesterday and my friend was about 5 minutes late (but en route), I was immediately pressured to "order for him or you can wait outside!"! Then when the servings came, it looked like they split the portion that I ordered in two... (much less than I have gotten in the past at this place) Now I understand times are tough, but looking at the portions that other customers were getting, it seems that they were mildly ripping us off, especially since they've raised prices. They also did not serve desert and are non-licenced, further minimizing the culinary experience.
I've been to this restaurant about 5 times now and this is the worst service I've ever gotten, although they do tend to rush you (which is fine if you're just stopping thought), hence the 2 stars. Its unfortunate, but this restaurant could be much more with the right management. At the moment, it seems that they are working the customers as hard as they are working their chefs!
Food was alright, but HORRIBLE Service.: I have never experienced or even been to a resturaunt that treat their customers so terribly. After we left, they demanded that we give them tip even though we already did. On top of it, I spoke to the manager and he stated that, "they give good service and expect something back." He has a horrible atittude, and the food was not that great. It was oily, and the pud thai tasted a bit awkward. Although, the fried tofu w/ peanut sauce was pretty good and so was the vegetable eggrolls, it will not compromise the fact that the manager only gives to receive, and waiters and waitresses service was average. Also, if you are looking for nice, peaceful setting, this will not be the place. The atmosphere was almost unbearable. This resturaunt does not get my recommendation, since there are multitudes of better mouth watering Thai Places well worth your money nearby!
