I can't rate it but there is a story here! Samirs!: Cedars on the South side of the street -- Samirs on the North side of the Street opened in the Fall of 2005.
For some reason, we chose not to eat here. For some reason, we went across the street and ate. That was a mediterranean restaurant, too.
As I looked out across the street, I wondered why 2 restaurants serving mediterranean food would open so close. I thought to myself -- "they must be relatives". There are at least 2 other mediterranean restaurnts around University Avenue but they are scattered about.
Samir's is the restaurant across the street. It is run by Samir -- and he is friendly. Doesn't bite. So we got to talking. And I mentioned that that must be a relative across the street, the two restaurants seem to be so close. Lo and behold, its his brother's place across the street!
It turns Samir worked there for 28 years -- came to America at the time of the first Lebanese Civil War (I was there, too but I'm not Lebanese -- just a traveller). Samir worked for his brother all that time but in 2005, his brother dismissed him and set him adrift, according to Samir. So what did Samir do? He bought the place across the street -- sold heroes/subways at first but since he loved Mediterranean food -- he changed to that. Its not as fancy as Cedars, but the food is good -- and Samir is friendly.
Tell Samir hello for me if you go. Samir didn't say a nasty thing about his brother -- but the friend that was helping Samir did have some nasty things to say about Samir's brother that was not complimentary. He claimed to be a "loyal friend" to Samir. Kind of sorry to see that a brother would turn his own brother out -- but Samir wasn't bitter though I'm sure it left a bad taste in his mouth. The food served -- either wraps or full dinners are satisfying and reasonably priced.
This is not a rating of the restaurant's but a story to tell in case you eat at either place. :) Sort of ironic for Samir's brother, isn't it? .
The Best: Cedars is arguably the best East Indian restaurant in Seattle. Their dishes are prepared in traditional styles, and there are plenty of selections. The prices are moderate and affordable, but there is almost always a line for dinner. The lunch menu is just as good, and features many of the same items.
You cannot go wrong with Cedars.
Love Lebaneese: If you love Lebaneese food you must try Cedars restaurant in the University District. I love Middle Eastern cuisine, and they have the best platters of Kabobs, Baba Ghanoush, Humous, Fatoush Salad, and I love the Lebaneese ice tea. The wait staff is very polite, and you get big portions.
