What Can I say? Good food, cheap drinks, bitchy service... A perfect dive bar!
Sorry to fly in the face of others, maybe it was a bad night. I've been to Mike's 3 times now. The first night I drank beer with a friend and ordered the cheeseburger deluxe; don't do it, it was horrible.
No worries I thought, it's a chili place, the second time I was gun shy and stuck with just beer. Tonight, my third visit, it was beer for my friend and I and after downing two pounders, I ordered a "bowl" of chili. First off, the bowl was a whole lot closer to a "cup" than a bowl. Second, I thought it was a vegetarian chili until near the bottom of the bowl I spotted some beef-or some kind of meat. The broth was very thin and fluid, not at all chili like. Almost like it had been severely watered down as the spices seemed very light and almost undetectable. In short, the worst bowl of chili I have ever eaten.
Thank God for the drunk fisherman returning from Alaska who "rang the bell" enabling all a free drink. That at least made the balance sheet a little less bad.
I've been enjoying Mike's Chile since August of 1956.
In my opinion there's nothing like it on the planet.
Simply stated "It just doesn't get any better than that".
If you don't like chile don't bother trying it but if you are a chile lover it is a must. Once you've tried it you'l be hooked like I've been for over a half a century now.
If you have a man sized appetite their chile steak is really the thing to do. The pleasure generated in enjoying it will border on sensuous. I guaranty it!
I do like all the trimmings they offer, but when it comes to just a bowl of their chile I'm a bit of a purist. I just like it straight so as not to interfere with supreme the flavor of it. However while I'm not a dyed in the wool beer drinker per se I think there must be an unwritten law somewhere that beer must accompany it and it must have been invented just for that purpose.
Whether your pallet is for a hot dog, burger, fries or pasta you will be delighted to see how their chile can grace any meal. Don't forget to take some home too. It will make a culinary hero out of you. Be creative and enjoy it straight or with beans on scrambled eggs, omelets, hash browns baked potato, etc. It will change your style of cooking forever.
Bon Apete'.
