| About: | Many Seattle visitors miss treasures in out-of-the-way West Seattle. Not least among these is this little steak house called Jak's Grill. Limited seating doesn't stop guests from putting their names on the waiting list. The decor is characterized by dark woods and dim lights. There are five top-grade steaks on the menu, from Filet Mignon to Porterhouse au Poivre. You will also find a selection of seafood, chicken and pork. A huge meal here should cost less than $20. There is also a bar in the back. |

Joe and I and 3 ladies went to JaK's in West Seattle for dinner on 5/27/08 to determine if their steaks were better than those at The Brooklyn in Seattle. The evaluation has been made. Joe considers the Filet Mignon at JaK's in West Seattle to be better than that at The Brooklyn. After 15 minutes of reducing the size of his 15 ounce entrée, his answer to my question of "How does it compare to the Brooklyn's?" was "This is the best Filet that I have EVER eaten.". Everybody enjoyed their meal. My Rib Eye came in two pieces. I found the small piece to be a little tough and was too full to attack the big piece after the small one was consumed. But when we got home I made a sandwich from the big piece and found it to be quite tender. I found their French fries to be comparable to the best I have ever eaten and the ladies all rated the vegetables as very good. The salads were large and tasted good but could have used more dressing. The desserts were disappointing. Joe and I had the Burnt Cream which was much too heavy and far from being even close to the quality of that at The Brooklyn.
For the most part, all five of us enjoyed our meals and would be happy to eat at JaK's again. Ani, our waitress did an excellent job and not only eliminated the charge for one of the Burnt Creams when she learned of the not -so-tender Rib Eye but even offered to bring another entrée. Megan, the Hostess also did an excellent job in seating us as soon as we arrived at 5:30 and gave us business cards for JaK's in the University district when we told her we were from Whidbey Island. Both of these ladies were charming and there was no waiting line on this particular Tuesday night and there was plenty of available parking in the public parking lot behind JaK's. In general the experience was very good, with the location and the personnel getting high marks in the "User Friendly" category.
Best Steak in Town and West Seattle Has It: I used to eat my steak well done, but Jak's has shown me the light. Now I just ask for medium, and let the chef decide how when it's right. And the chef is always right. It's a pleasant surprise to find that one of Seattle's best steakhouses isn't located downtown, but in West Seattle's Junction neighborhood, where the locals seem to keep it a guarded secret. The service and atmosphere is a step above your neighborhood expectation, but the dress is still Seattle casual. Finally, I admit I go to Jak's for the potato pancakes (or the three other styles of potato) as much as the steak.
WOW!: This is an amazing steakhouse! My boyfriend and I recently went there (early: we heard how long the waiting list can be on weekends) and the steaks were simply divine. Grilled perfectly to our order and seasoned just so. The house salad that came with it was another story. It was plate full of chopped iceberg lettuce and some dressing on top. No veggies, not even a tomato. But we were perfectly willing to let that slide when we were served our entrees. The main focus here is the steak and they reign supreme in that area. Don't even think of asking for A1 at this place! You will not need it. The fantastic potato pancakes are a delicious meal on their own!
That all topped with great service makes this the steakhouse to go to!
