My wife and I stopped going to CLarks because since the owners have had it, they have ran it into the ground. After years, the parking lot is still a rutted, pot holed, dusty gravel area in front. Entering the restaurant, you walk into a room where the flooring is cracked and dirty, the walls and corners have cobwebs hanging from them, the bathrooms leave you feeling uneasy. The food is iffy. If it's good, you don't mind paying the premium but you don't even get a bag of chips with the high priced hamburger. However, when the owners are gone and the place is being staffed entirely by high school kids, the food isn't up to par. I watched a pizza served to another table that looked like a large burnt scab. Another time the french fries I ordered came and were slimy with hot oil. Sorry, I can't recommend this place. It is a once was and the prices have gotten too high.
Walking into Clarke's the first time, I returned to place I had never been before and didn't know I had been missing. Perhaps it is because my Grandpa used to go there when he was a teenager, perhaps it's some memory passed through the generations. Clarke's just feels like home. Better than home. Better than the nameless, generic Los Angeles eateries that don't care and don't ask. Clarke's is not watching your calories, it's just filling your belly and making you smile. The big juicy hamburgers and divine shakes whisper "This is authentic, this what life is supposed to be about." The small family-owned and operated establishment seems timeless and permanent. It's on a road between here and there, maybe on your way home, more likely completely out of the way, but man is it worth the drive. We're going back up to Washington for the holidays, driving 1700 miles, and the whole way I'm going to be thinking about a Clarke's hamburger and a chocolate malt. Or maybe a coconut shake. Or maybe a Mocha shake. Or maybe all three, because you can't find that quality and that variety at just any old diner. It's special.
awsome: there was awsome service and the food was exellent
if you go there i reccommend the milkshakes they are the best in america!!
