We have been going to the Thai Orchid for over 10 years and have always been pleased with their food and service. Yesterday we stopped in for a late lunch at 2:15 PM. When we walked in we were greeted by a young woman who told us they had stopped seating and would reopen for dinner at 4:30 PM. Disappointed, we left, but as we walked out the door, we noticed the lunch hours posted on window stated that seating for lunch was until 2:30 PM. We thought perhaps she had misread the time so we went back and pointed out that the current time was only 2:15 PM and according to their sign, lunch hour seating was until 2:30 PM. Her response was that they stop seating at 2:15 PM. If they are going to stop seating for lunch at 2:15 PM, that information should be reflected on their window, this website, and anywhere else they advertise. Not to honor the hours your have posted is inappropriate business practice. While the food is excellent (4-5 starts), this failure to observe stated hours is poor (1 star). This experience means that we can no longer recommend this restaurant with confidence.
Decent food, but service could be better.: After reviewing their web site, I was really excited about trying Thai Orchid. Unfortunately, when it was all said and done, I wished my partner and I had driven across town to Thai Lotus instead. The restaurant smelled a bit fishy when we first walked through the door, and the ambience was a little too stark for me. We were seated promptly, but the waitress came by and dropped the plates and forks onto our table with a little more gusto than was necessary.
We ordered the fresh spring rolls as an appetizer. They were very good, although I personally prefer a thicker peanut sauce than was offered for dipping. My partner ordered the seafood combination, and I ordered a vegetarian curry dish. The seafood was terrific (if a little on the pricey side). The curry was saltier than I expected, and I would have requested more spice if the waitress had not walked away before I was done telling her what I wanted. In retrospect, I would have also tried the Thai iced tea if the waitress had asked us if we wanted anything to drink, but the service was a bit abrupt.
Overall, the food is pretty good and the prices are reasonable. I can't say the same for the service. If you're willing to drive to SE Vancouver, I recommend trying Thai Lotus instead.
#1 place to get fried spring rolls: I love their spring rolls (fried and unfried)(#1 & #2) and the sweet n sour with tofu (#40). It's nice that most everything can be made with tofu if you want it like that.
