Good Beer and Food: I love the Tav. It is one of those places that you can count on for a great burger, good beer, and usually very good service.
In the winter months, it gets very crowded, as it was last Friday night. My husband and I met a group of friends there, and at one point we had about 10 people huddling around a table for 4. In the summers though, there is a great courtyard out back, the landscaping is very pleasant and the seating is abundant.
There is a wide variety of food, my favorite is a Hungry Mother hamburger with ham and bacon and a side of fries. They offer several good salads, appetizers, pastas, and sandwiches. The "Sandwich Boards" come with two slices of bread, the desired meat and cheese and all the other fixings on the side so that you can construct your own sandwich just the way you like it. This is a big bonus for me, since I am not a big sandwich fan, and when I do eat one, I like it in a very particular way. Also, every Friday is "Prime Rib Night" which is probably why it was so crowded when we were there last Friday, it is very popular with the locals. They have daily specials that are usually very good and usually a bit more sophisticated than the daily menu.
The beer is very good, and they have a nice selection, including pints on tap from the new local Iron Horse Brewery. My husband and I always share pitchers of Mack-N-Jacks, which is our favorite, hard to find, and only is sold by the keg. I highly recommend it if you like a strong beer.
The staff is almost always very good, and if theres a problem, it can usually be attributed to a rush of customers coming in at once. The prices are very reasonable, less than $4 for a huge burger. There are pool tables, dartboards, and a jukebox for entertainment.
This is truly an Ellensburg treasure!
