| About: | Simple and crisp, this cafe is akin to traveling to Seattle - without leaving Alaska. Small, with 20 wooden tables and filled with plants and interesting artwork, this has become a regular meeting place for several organized groups in Anchorage. It is the only fully organic restaurant in town. Hearty Belgian waffles are served on Saturday mornings and power smoothies are available as well. There is one meat item offered, a range-fed turkey sandwich . For dessert, try their refreshing homemade sorbet. Fresh juices, organic beer and wines are available. |

The food is great you should go. The service is great. The atmosphere is great. I don't have one bad thing to say at all and I will return again.
Love It: I love Organic O, they have great food and its awesome for vegetarians. I have to wonder on the comment below, do we even have many lamb farmers in the AK? ;)
At Your Risk!!!!!!!!!!: I'm all about promoting local and organic foods. I have asked several staff in the past why they carry New Zealand lamb and not lamb from a local farmer and no one seemed to know. I spoke with the manager and she basically said that they are very pleased with their product from New Zealand so that's what they're sticking with. I questioned this since it would make more sense to get it from a local producer. She stood her ground that they like the lamb they're currently using and have no plans to change. I'm thinking about shipping costs and supporting local farmers. All organic restaurants I've been to previously pride themselves on sourcing local and in season products. I would think that Organic Oasis would be interested in setting an example for the consumer about the importance of using local products to support Alaska's economy and to help slow global warming. I could tell that the manager didn't want to be bothered with the idea of changing their lamb product. There are restaurants in Anchorage that enjoy sourcing their meat from local farmers, have great atmospheres and impeccable service. As I recall my experiences at Organic Oasis I think of the mediocre food and sketchy service. Those two things paired with their values about where they source their products from is enough for me to take my business elsewhere. I encourage anyone that cares about what their dollar stands for to NOT support Organic Oasis.

There are lamb farmers in the valley. For that matter there are many on the west coast of the United States. The only reason I can think that they didn't want to say why they get their lamb all the way from New Zealand is that Sam's Club has lamb from New Zealand. Since lamb tends to be expensive maybe that's where they get it from. It just doesn't support the practice of local, organic, and everything else a health food restaurant is usually proud of taking a stand on.
