My brother and I have been to Kings Run charter three times over the last 4 years, and each year it keeps getting better and better. My brother is a charter captain out of N.J., and I fish a lot in the Gulf. Together, we've seen a lot of good captains, and a number of bad captains. Larry's one of the best. He put us on the fish and didn't quit until every one on board had their limit or the tides got us. I was also really impressed watching Larry working with young fisher persons and/or the less experienced.
The accommodations at Larry's 3-sided cabin were great. Clean towels every day, assorted sundries, and the best coffee we had in Alaska. It was even better than we expected.
Every night when we returned Susan would whip up either deep fried halibut bits, halibut chowder, or some other delectable delight for us to snack on.
They always made sure our catch was cleaned and processed, ready to ship home. After a whole day of fishing, Larry and Susan always made sure to include us in whatever family event they had planned for the evening. It might be a marshmallow roast, a Bar-B-Que, or simply a story telling session by the campfire, but they sure made us feel at home. I'll never forget their hospitality and always be appreciative for making our Ninilchik fishing adventures very memorable.
We've been back twice since our first time, and each time we stay longer. Last night I had halibut for dinner that we caught 08/2011. It was great!
The accommodations, the hospitality, and fishing are above reproach. I look forward to getting back to Kings Run Charters again. Larry and Susan really go out of their way to make sure your Ninilchik experience is memorable. Highly recommended!
Before arriving to the Kings Run Charter and lodging spot we called several times asking question and always got an answer and decided this was a great family owned business and made reservations 2 weeks in advance.
Once we were in route to Ninilcik we called and left messages before arriving to visit Suzan and Larry's cabin and never once got a return call or an apology. So of course with only the address, we arrived on Wed Aug 10th around 8:30pm to the Kings Run Charter in Ninilchik from Anchorage only to find no one there or anywhere around. So we just unloaded our luggage and started to get settled in,feeling uncomfortable, but after seeing the pics on the internet we were positive we were in the right place. We then decided to start some dinner and take showers and unwind after our long trip only to find no hot water and no propane and noone at or anywhere near the cabin,we had made these reservation 2 weeks in advance so they knew we would be arriving.
With us only having a grill and no stove and no propane we had to get back in the car and find a restraunt to eat some dinner we still continued to call and leave a few more messages.
Finally, on our 5 or 6th attempt to get someone we got ahold of Susan and she then put Larry on the phone an said it would be taken care of.
When returning to the cabin it was dirty and had someone elses hair in the bathtub.. And the water smelled absolutly horrible, the worst sulfur ever, it will gag you as you are attempting to brush your teeth.
The cabin had no hand soap, no washcloths, no coffee mugs and they only supplied us with 4 towels total for 3 days and 4 people.
Not once on our 3 night stay did they check on us to see if we needed anything.
We had told Larry how unhappy we were on Thursday morning with the conditions and asked him If we could check out early and his response was sure he didn't want us to be unhappy. We then decided to wait until the am and after the boys charter we would head back to Anchorage. That way we were only leaving one day early and he would still stand to make some decent money off us. It was a win- win for everyone.
So we waited patiently all day for the boys to get back from their charter which they didn't arrive till 8:15pm
We were already packed and had reserved another room in Anchorage. Then Larry tells us we have to pay no matter if we leave or not for the night. After spending $550.00 for the extra night and charter and now he tells us he can't process the fish and we pretty much have to stay we were so upset. All of this took place on Thursday evening and this is the first time we ever seen Suzan and she had no soup ready, but she did have a friend over, for them after there charter which was part of the package. This was a complete joke......
They were never home....... No military discount......No warm soup after charter...... They had a worker working on their house banging and sawing building a porch.... The nasty sulfur smell inside and the property smelled like cow manure outside... No trash can except a small bathroom bin and we had no idea where to dispose or the trash we did have...and when they were there they never asked if we needed anything and never asked us if we were ok.
They were the worst hosts ever, I would not recommend this place to anyone!!!!! They are way to occupied with there own activity's to have a business.
