We've been to Grandma's a number of times in past years and it was a fun place and the food was good. Not so now. The only thing good about our experience at Grandma's last night was that the French Onion Soup was tasty. Other than the soup, the rest of my meal was horrible. I had the Walleye sandwich and fries. The sandwich was served open-face. I think they put tarter sauce on the bun and grilled it face down, yuck... hot tarter sauce. There was a piece of hot limp dark green lettuce draped on one side that looked like it had been laying on the kitchen floor all day before it was glued to the bun with hot tarter sauce. It was accompanied by two tomato slices that were dusted with a seasoning mix, no doubt an attempt to cover up the fact that they were inedible (I tried a bite of one, I'm not just speculating on the tomatoes being indedible). The 'beer batter deep-fried' Walleye was nothing like what you might expect. It had a hard mealy crust that I could hardly peel off the fish so I could at least eat the fish. If that fillet was deep-fried, it must have happened a long time ago. I think the only heat it saw last night was when it was nuked in the microwave before it was laid atop the grilled bun to rest next to the sorrowful lettuce and tomatoes. My husband and I both had fries, they were run of the mill, dry, lukewarm fries not worth eating. McDonalds makes better fries, to give you an idea of how disappointing they were. When the waitress returned, about 20 minutes into the meal, she paused at our table to say 'everything good' then immediately turned her back to clear another table. I said 'no, it's not'. She turned back and I said this is terrible, lifting the edge of the dead lettuce for her to see. She said, in an exasperated tone, "You should have said something earlier". So, too bad for me apparently, I guess I screwed up. Foolish me, I didn't know I was expected to hunt down the disappearing wait staff. I was clearly unhappy and she did nothing to rectify the situation. She just came back and plopped the bill on the table, including $11.49 for the miserable entree I could only pick a few bits of edible fish out of. My husband had a burger with bacon and cheese. He said it was just 'okay' nothing special. Grandma's in Duluth seems to be resting on it's laurels of days gone by when the atmosphere was fun and the food was great. I wouldn't trust it again though, times have changed. We paid the bill, tipped on the part of it that we could actually eat and left the waitress a note. "Take a look at what you are serving your customers when you bring it out." At least I had one of the requisite Tobies carmel rolls back at the hotel to stand in for the evening meal.
Typical Grandma's...not that that's bad. Busy, loud, good food, and on this trip very good service.
Boring: If you like conventional American food cooked with no creativity or flair, this is the place.
