Decided to stop into Steve's while driving through town. Very yummy pizza! Ordered a thin crust Canadian bacon and pineapple (dine in). Staff was pleasant, pizza was hot and tasty, atmosphere was great! Excellent place to dine in - especially considering the small town feel of Austin. Will definitely be back for more next time I'm in town!
I visited Austin for 5 nights this last week and called Steve's as their menu was in my motel directory. I was attracted by their late night hours and delivery service (as I was ordering around 11:30PM). To that end, they did answer the phone reasonably promptly and held to their time quote for delivery.
However...on their menu they have pizzas either by picking your toppings or common combos (i.e. ham & pineapple, meat combo, veggie combo, etc). I decided to order the sausage, green pepper, and onion combo - a 3 topping pizza. Price was reasonable for a three topping pizza, especially compared to ordering individual toppings. Pizza was not bad, though nothing spectacular. Could have used a little more sauce. Next night I decided to try Steve's again based on a good enough first impression. I really wanted a sausage, MUSHROOM, and onion pizza - basically same as last night other than substitute one topping. They would not substitute - if I wanted that exact pizza I would have to pay for three individual toppings, adding about $2-3 to the pizza. Really? Three toppings is three toppings, especially when you're talking about veggies. Is there really that much additional cost? Apparently, Steve places a premium on mushrooms as the third night I tried one more time other than decided on the spaghetti meal. In the menu, mushrooms are an additional dollar. I tried the meal, which includes a salad and garlic bread, plus the mushrooms for a buck. Mushrooms are canned, not fresh and therefore the premium price on the mushrooms is really unjustified. Plus, the "salad" is literally nothing more than chopped lettuce in a cup (plus your dressing, I suppose). Finally, the spaghetti was overcooked and the sauce was bland. Steve, the price was fairly low but a really low quality meal too. Add 50 cents if you have to and get more flavor to the pasta, plus do a real salad - not chopped lettuce passed as a "salad". Put some tomatoes, onions, olives onto it!
Finally, with the spaghetti delivered I noticed as soon as the driver left I had no utensils included. I tried calling the restaurant thinking perhaps the driver made an honest mistake and didn't include them. My hope is they could call the driver on a cell phone and he could return before he got too far away. Nope...was told they don't usually include silverware. Keep in mind they delivered to and obviously knew I was in a motel. Am I supposed to think ahead and bring silverware when I go on the road? Who does that? The little plastic silverware packs with napkin are about a nickel a piece...think ahead for your customer. Even at home it's sometimes nice to have the plasticware and not have to worry about dishes to wash.
Perhaps Steve gets away with mediocre product and service due to lack of competition. I have to think if he had better competition, this product and service wouldn't fly.
The end note is while it could be far worse and did put food in my stomach, there's no compelling reason to choose Steve's unless you have no other choice. I gave more than a fair chance and have to say I wouldn't likely return if or when I return to Austin.
