Great Mexican food! This is the most Authentic Mexican food in Central Minnesota. When the Mexican community (My community) talks about authentic Mexican food El Portal always comes up as number 1. enjoy!
I have had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant several times and I must say that each time it consistently provides an enjoyable experience. When I was first told about El Portal I thought, right, a truly authentic Mexican restaurant in west central Minnesota? I don't think so. Was I ever wrong.
From the moment you enter the building it has that distinct smell of fresh corn tortillas. Those of you that have ever eaten at any of the numerous Mexican restaurants in the 26XX and Nicollett area or been to Mexico know what I'm talking about. The lovely family that owns the restaurant greets you at the entrance, waits the tables, cooks the food, and if you are feeling chatty, are more than happy to visit with you as you dine.
On a recent visit my server was the family patriarch. I asked him if they ever had chicken mole on the menu as it is a favorite of mine. He said that they did not as it was not something they thought would be popular with the diners. A few minutes later he returned to my table to tell me that if I was ever in the mood for chicken mole, that I should call one day in advance and they would make it special for me. He explained that his mothers recipe was outstanding and he was sure I would enjoy it. What a wonderful example of exceptional customer service. I look forward to trying Abuela's (Grandma's) chicken mole.
For anyone traveling on I-94, please please do not miss this restaurant. It is easy access off of the highway and worth a drive. I would travel from Alexandria which is about 40 minutes. Muchas Gracias El Portal!
A wonderful Mexican experience...in Minnesota!: My family and I had brunch at the El Portal on Mother's Day. We were warmly welcomed at the door and were really treated like "family" throughout the meal. The food was fantastic. I would definitely recommend what we had ordered, a combination plate of a steak taco, empenada and chicken enchilada, and the ribeye tacos. The meals are served with warm chips and 2 kinds of homemade salsas, and soup is served before the entrees. A special "tres leches" cake was served after the meal for the mothers. The owner explained that his wife had adjusted the recipe many times until she had perfected it...it was wonderful. We also noticed, as we left, that there was a Mother's Day special of surf and turf--breaded, fried shrimp and grilled or broiled steak that was displayed on a platter as you come in the door that looked great for $15.
The El Portal also serves breakfast dishes. They had a Cinco de Mayo party recently, which, according to the owners, was a great success. If my limited Spanish serves me correctly, there was a sign posted that announced dancing on Saturday nights.
This restaurant is truly a diamond in the rough. It was definitely worth our 30 minute drive to experience the warm hospitality and fantastic food that this family offers. Try it--you won't be disappointed.
