When I moved to Bemidji one of the first things I did was locate a pet shop to buy food and supplies for my pet. I visited all of the pet shops in Bemidji and loved Friendly Fins the best. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the other store I went to they were very snooty. The shop is clean, neat, and smells great! I have never seen a sick animal there.
As a former employee of the Pet store for quite a few years after Cheri bought it. I would like to say last time I was in the store which was just a month ago. The store was as always a very clean store to say that we don't care about the health of the animals is a down right lie I can remember a time where puppies got sick with Parvo which is very hard to detect in fact the puppy that brought it in had been cleared by the in house vet at the time as healthy. Cheri and her employees did everything they could to save the animals that were sick and keep the healthy ones healthy. many times sick animals or rescues have gone to employee homes to be cared for and nurtured back to health. Yes I will admit that sometimes the puppies or kittens can get a little crowded but the only reason it ever gets that way is if they breed of dog sells very well which means one maybe two days of a little crowding. HOWEVER the dogs are taken out at least to the main store area or outside weather permitting on a regular basis to play with employees and customers no matter how many or how few dogs there are. The store also has a new more spacious layout then it did when I seen it last year and while I can't confirm it I do believe at least one of the bad reviews on line at insider pages was from a former employee that was let go for very good reasons so my recommendation is to check the store for your self and while your there remember that this store last I checked is associated with the whipstaff ranch which an animal rescue service!!!!!! How bad can the place be? PS. The store has only moved once since Cheri bought it and it was to a nicer location with better customer access to allow animals to sell better and faster so that they don't have to live their life in a pet store instead of a nice home.
So... I wrote a review a few years ago about how bad the place was... and believe it was bad (I had gotten two sick animals from there that were both very malnurished) the place smelled bad, it was cramped and dirty (and I am not saying that because I couldn't afford a $200 dog... it's because it's the truth)... but in the past few months, they have really done a 180! I am very impressed with what they have done and am happy they did it. The workers are knowledgeable and friendly. The animals look healthier and the place is clean! I will buy from there again and this time I will have confidence that I am buying a healthy and happy animal!

obviously the dog area is going to smell. they are DOGS. but the cages are cleaned twice a day, theres nothing you can do about the way a small space is going to smell like when there is many animals there.
actually you can control the smell of a small area... don't put that many animals in it. they over crowd their animals and could care less about the animals health. i bought a cat and a dog from them, both were very very malnurished and sick, cat had infestation of stomach parasites and dog had horrible manage. both of which they refused to pay for. the cat suffered more so then the dog. she never did reach an adult size or weight because of how sick she was when i saved her life.
