About:Built by Mr. and Mrs. John de Menil, this chapel is only one block away from the extraordinary art museum, The Menil Collection. The abstract expressionist, Mark Rothko, created 14 immense paintings for the chapel, and the meditative atmosphere that resulted makes this an incomparable and wonderful place to spend some quiet time. The renowned architect, Phillip Johnson, along with Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubrey designed this octagonal brick structure. In front of the chapel in a pool is Barnett Newman's sculpture entitled Broken Obelisk. Susan Barnes has written a history of the Rothko Chapel.

The Rothko Chapel is a extremely amazing building with diverse and unique interiors. After experiencing The Minel Collection the Rothko Chapel should definately be your next stop. As a art student I felt a passion for the history of the building which should be respected in the memory of Mark Rothko. It is a welcoming place for any religion which I highly appreciated as a buddist. The meditative auroa of the bulding filled my stomach with a sense of clearity and understanding.

Go to the SwamiNarayan Temple instead: I'm sorry but I was just not feeling it. I would not consider this a chapel. There's just really nothing but a bunch of black paintings inside. It's just not as exciting as the sculpture in the pond out front. The Byzantine Chapel is far more impressive.

Chapels should not be judged on impressivness but on the morals and concept. The black paintings are symbolism. I suggest reading the history before saying that it is not a chapel.

Best Chapel in Houston: This is one of the most spiritual places ever. Many people miss the point of the paintings & don't take the time for them to change from black to many colors & abstract images. This place is so awesome if you take the time to appreciate it.
