Paula's has been our favorite restaurant, and never disappoints. While the price is higher than most restaurants, it is well worth it with the fresh selection and quality of preparation.
Salads are not overdressed, simple a sprinkling of feta, pine nuts and raspberry dressing. We always get the crabcakes, which are over 90% crab and sensational (You'll never settle for breaded crab cakes again!)We always get the Almond-crusted walleye, which is filling but without being too heavy on the stomach.
Service, as always, is impeccible.
Our favorite restaurant will continue to be so!
DH and I are from the east coast, so we did not expect authentic east coast seafood, but did expect it to be very tasty from the reviews we read. We had reservations and was seated quickly. The atmosphere was pretty nice- typical seafood restaurant atmosphere- white table cloths, fish related decor, and a fish counter in view, but rather cozy, except there was 2 levels and the second level above us was the pub and quite noisy....chairs banging the floor and an occassional whoop.
The order was taken quickly and drinks were prompt. The bread was a nice seasoned sourdough, but not as warm as I would have expected. Real butter was a plus.
The appetizer we ordered was a bucket of peel and eat shrimp. I forgot (since it had been a few years since I have had peel and eat shrimp) that means they are not deveined. So I spent a lot of time taking the veins out of mine, but that was not thier fault...I should have ordered them peeled and deveined. The cocktail sauce had a nice kick.
The salads came next. My salad was greek. Small but nice balance of dressing, feta cheese, onions, toatoe, green and red peppers...a bit light on the olives...but tasted good.
DH ordered a ceasar salad. He got romaine lettuce, grated parmesean cheese and 1 (yes one) crouton with very little dressing. No tomatoe, onion or anything else.
Then our order came. DH ordered the seafood platter. That had bay scallops (huge, nicely spiced), crab cake (disappointingly average. Large chunks of crab, but just as large chunks of bread and not much spice) and walleye (expected baked, but it came almondine- DH does not like nuts. Should have said on the menu- what if he had an allergy to them? He went to take a bite and when he picked up his first piece a really long hair followed- coated in breading and almonds). He started to pull it out to dispose of it and I called for the waitress. They took it back and left the potatoes....which were luke warm at best.
When they returned the plate, the fish was new but the rest was obviously reheated, apparent as the crab cake was now burned. New dish of potaotes- again they were cold.
At least my lobster tail ($40 market value) was not such a dissapointment. I would have liked more spice to it and cooked a bit less (rubbery on edges), but it was tasty dipped in drawn butter. The vegetables (green beans, edame and spinach) were simply steamed or sauteed with no flavor, I left them.
The service was wonderful, the waitress pleasant, prompt and served each course at the right time. I normally order dessert, but decided not to after seeing the hair. Our bill...$108 (DH had 2 Coronas, I had an iced tea). We did not feel it was worth it and will not return.
Food (sans hair) was average.
Service was wonderful.
Atmosphere would have been good if it was not for the upstairs noise.
Mmmmm....: My lady and I went to check this place out about a week ago. I do admit the set up of the place is very nice. The look is of an old meat shop where you could come and buy fresh fish and things of that sort. Anyway to the point...the food was ok. I was hype to try the sushi but it was too Americanized to enjoy, I'm used to the real thing. I don't recommend them as an appitizer. I ordered the Talapia (Main Dish). I was looking for something with more flavor. It was broiled and tasted like I could have made it and that's not what you want when you are out. My girlfriend ordered the spicy shrimp and it was pretty good. The shrimp were large and the dish was fairly tasty. They do however make good drinks. I would recommend this place for a social night out if you are tired of the bar scene. The social atmosphere is great. After we were done eating we sat around for an hour talking. The time after the meal was done was better than the meal itself. I'm not knocking the place. I'd try it again, just don't get the sushi or the Talapia:) Good luck!!!
