How do you say the best restaurant on the planet Earth in German? Last night, my wife, her cousin, his wife and myself had dinner at the Gasthaus and to say everything was perfect would be an understatement. Let's start with our server Barbara. The server can make or break your experience at a restaurant. Barbara was absolutely perfect, polite and totally professional, from her introduction as our server to the packaging of our leftovers. I had my favorite dish, which I believe is their signature dish, and that would be the pork shank. My wife had the sausage variety platter and the other two dishes were the Sauerbraten and the filet mignon. Each dish, including the butternut squash soup, the spinach salads with the hot bacon dressing down to the spatlese wine. were perfect. Add to that the ambience of an old world setting, and you have a perfect restaurant experience.
If you add the perfect food + the perfect server + the old world ambience it equals the best restaurant on Earth.
I discovered the Gasthaus many years ago while in the Milwaukee area for business. Since then I make the drive from Chicago to Waukesha a least once a year, to have dinner with my wife, spend the night at the Comfort Inn, have breakfast at the Machine Shed and then drive back to Chicago.
I rate the Weissgerber Gasthaus at way over the limit of five stars. Go there, eat, enjoy and be pleased. (Ask for Barbara, she is the best)
Ordered 1 appetizer and 1 soup. Then ordered a pork shank, but since the entree came in such a large portion, decided to split it with my wife. When the bill came, an extra $4 was charged as a "split fee" for sharing. Not that they split the shank for us and redecorated the meals, they just put out the same meal and gave us an extra plate. Didn't see anything written in the menu and the waitress never mentioned it (which as a courtesy, she should have). Tried to politely complain but to no avail. Although $4 won't break my bank, and the food was ok, in the future will likely spend my money elsewhere
Prost!: Having been to the Gasthaus dozens of times for both business and pleasure over the years, I can honestly say I have NEVER had a less than excellent meal.
I frequently entertain business partners there and many have asked to go again on return visits. My family also enjoys the Friday night fish fry, which is quite possibly the best in the area.
And the German beers that are on tap! Heaven!
