User Rating: 1 out of 5 starsNellie's use to be the go my whole family would go there and my father was becoming a regular. Then one day they change the cook and it all went down hill after that. The food is not seasoned at all and you can tell. When you as why there food taste bland they tell you that they have a new cook and he doesn't season the food. Now my question would be so why don't you stop him from cooking.
If you want good soul food go to Soul's Restaurant in East Oakland instead the food is much better with some taste and the service is beyond heavenly. You don't feel like you are just some income coming in to the restaurant to pay bill you feel like you are at home with family eating dinner.
User Rating: 2 out of 5 starsNellie is not that good at all to me Southern Cafe was so much better to bad they are now closed service at both places suck...The turkey wings at Nellies have nothing but skin and fat food comes out cold the quality of the meat used are pretty bad..Just not a good look

I live in San Jose and this was my first time at Nellie's and must say the waitress were customer service oriented. I ordered the smothered steak, rice/gravy,string beans and yams. The plate was full plus four little corn muffins. Everything was eaten! I can't say I liked anything more than the other. I am a southerner and EVERYTHING was delicious! Normally I don't have room for dessert but this time I heard the chocolate cake calling me. It was moist and delicious as well. As a teenager RC Coca Cola was my favourite soda. So when I asked for a Coke and the waitress replied 'we have RC Coca Cola' I nearly jumped out of my seat! I am looking forward to my next visit.
