| About: | "Nice Matin, named after the largest daily newspaper in the South of France, gives the Upper West Side a splash of Provencal sunshine and a heady introduction to the cuisine of Nice, home of the pissaladiere, pan bagnat and, if we are to believe the menu, a whopping big burger topped with comte cheese, smeared with aioli and served with a heap of rosemary-flecked fries. It's the best thing to happen to a hamburger since Daniel Boulud worked foie gras and short ribs into an all-beef patty. The pleasure is all on the plate, and it carries right through to the desserts.", William Grimes - NY Times. |

we stumbled upon this little gem by accident after traipsing around the city all day on my birthday. It was on a Sunday night and we sat outside and it was wonderful. I had the short ribs - picked up my knife to cut it and started to laugh as it was so tender it fell apart as soon as I put my fork in it. My husband had the leg of lamb and he was in heaven as he said it was awesome. Perfect portions, perfect service, and we had a full basket of bread. Just a perfect meal to end a perfect day. I hope when we go back a second time that it is as great as it was the first time. Prices were very reasonable for NYC dining.
Nice but...: It's one of the more fancier restaurant of Tour de France chain. Service was friendly, but what's up with bread server who walks around and serve 1 slice of bread at a time? I had to ask for bread several times which was bit annoying. Buttersquash and scallop risotto was rich and creamy. Aioli (garlic mayonnaise) platter was fresh. But both dishes were quite greasy and we regretted afterwards.
enjoyable: I stopped in alone for the late lunch menu after a busy day of museum-ing. I ordered an appetizer, the roast beets with chevre cheese, and the café au lait that is seved in a bowl! this small order, not even $10 was served up graciously by the staff. the beets & chevré were aperfect refreshing pick-me-up, and the coffee was wonderful; served in a large bowl with a spoon, one could scoop up every bit of the rich foam, and enjow the pleasantly bitter dark roast coffe underneath.
Next evening, 4 of us stopped in for a somewhat hurried pre-theatre dinner. Again the staff eagerly accommodated. They were very efficient with our varied orders of salads, appetizers, entrees, wines, ice coffee, and split checks. The dessert special, wild strawberries, was enthusiastically recommended by our server & the lived up to her description - sweet-tart falvodrful berries with just a touch of creamy ricotta-balsamic sauce as a counterpoint. The green almond garnish was cute, if pointless.
Indoors or out the seating is spacious. Nice recorded music. A good "home base" restarant to the Upper West Side traveller.
