I recently moved to the Troy/Lansingburg area. Looking for a new Chinese food establishment to call my own I decided to give Spring Garden a try. I could not think of a worse waste of money. (Except maybe giving multi-million dollar bonuses to CEOs of failing corporate companies shortly after receiving a huge bail out from the government...but that's another rant all together...) Not only was everything I ordered completely loaded with grease, it was sub-par at best. I don't think a single thing was actually hand/home made. Everything seemed as if it came frozen and was simply fried. Even the dumplings and eggrolls. The only thing that was half way decent was the beef and broccoli, but it tasted more like a Skillet Creation you can find in your grocer's freezer than chinese food. It was very lacking in that great chinese food flavor - ginger, garlic, etc. Maybe that's the standard in the Troy area. But my old chinese food stompin' grounds made pretty much everything themselves. And if they didn't, they sure fooled me - it was a much better quality frozen food. (Lam's Kitchen and Golden Dragon in Albany are my favorites. Golden Dragon's crab rangoon is RIDICULOUS...Ridiculous being a good thing.) So, if you're as big a fan of chinese food as I am, do yourself a favor and DO NOT order from Spring Garden. I consider myself a fair person and normally, as in the past, if I order take out from a new place and it's not that great, I will give them another try or two. No one is perfect. But not Spring Garden. No way. It wouldn't be worth it to me to try another $1 egg roll from there. Next time I get a hankering for some delicious chinese food, I'll look elsewhere. I'd rather go without than order from Spring Garden again.
I have gotten take out from this place many times and am never disappointed. I am a vegetarian and they have several yummy options to choose from.
The "BEST": We have been ordering food from this establishment for years (since it opened). We have never been disappointed. The food is excellent (tried many items) and the prices are pretty good. Deliverly time is usually a lot faster than they tell you. If you read the paper (5/25/06 article on fake $100 bills), then you will know they are also honest. We have gone to most every chinese take-out and buffet around the tri-city area and you can't find a better place than Spring Garden. If you really look at it, their prices are even comparable to a chinese buffet (without dessert). We keep forgetting that they give you a free 2 liter soda with $25 or more so make sure you tell them what type of soda you want or you will get "coke". Try it. If you like chinese food, we don't think you will be disappointed.
