Visiting from California to my friend in Fresh Meadows again, and we had such a good dinner last time, decided to go back. As good as ever. It started with a fesh salad brought to the table. My friend had the pillows again, and I had falafel for an appetizer. I love falafel, and I was not dissappointed.
My friend had the lamb kabob again for dinner, (Perfectly cooked) and I had some sort of a beef stew with brown basmati rice. I didn't know basmati came in brown. Even better than normal basmati rice. Again, dinner was not too spicy, and the beef was so tender. The gravy was absolutely divine. Dinner was about $20 apiece, with enough food to take home for a second meal.
They once again served green tea after dinner as a "palate cleanser." The decor was as nice as it was last time. I was just as pleased this time as I was before. As I mentioned before, it's a spot on the LIE service road, but it is well worth looking for.
I was visiting frin Northern California. A friend in Fresh Meadows who lives just down the street from this place had never been there, so we decided.... "What the firetruck..." :) and decided to give it a chance.
Absolutely beautiful decor on the inside. Muted lighting, decorations on the wall, and other nice decorations.
My friend and I started with some sort of fried "pillows", with chickpeas on the inside. Tender and delicious. My friend had the lamb kabob with pita bread. She gave me a piece of her lamb, and it was so tender and flavorful. I had (I could never tell you the Afghani name), chicken and basmati rice. Basmati rice is already my favorite, but this was even more tender and flavorful.
After dinner, they gave us complimentary green tea and a sponge cake to "cleanse our palates." As it was, dinner was so big, we had enough to take home for dinner the following night. Cost of all of this was only about $30.00.
Another reviewer said this is Queens' best kept secret. I agree. It's just a little storefront on the L.I.E. service road, but it's worth the find. I was so impressed, I promosed the owner I'd write a review for him. This is a place not to be missed.
I haven't gone here for a number of years. Last time I went, it was still called Mustangs. But the fare was incredible. Great Afghani cuisine. Portions were huge and prices were reasonable. Two people can share one plate. Appetizers were excellent as well. I live close by, and every time I drive by the restaurant, I tell myself that I have to go back.
