Best thing happening on the Upper West Side: Underground Lounge is an like an East Village haunt that's not in the East Village. If you live on the Upper West Side, you know there's not much going on in the way of entertainment venues, But UL has one of the best rooms ever for live music, especially small, acoustic outfits. The cozy underground venue/bar (which also serves food) is walled in brick and stone, with a bench around the room's perimeter lined with cushy pillows. Candles illuminate the room, and during most live music sets, a psychedelic lighted backdrop creates a vibe that'll take you right back to an era when Jefferson Airplane and the Strawberry Alarm Clock were in their heydey. The really nice thing about the room at UL is that it's completely separate from the general bar area, and the pool table room, so you can really get lost in the act that's onstage. UL also hosts some great comedy nights and open mic nights for musicians and comedians. It's probably the COZIEST venue in the entire city. Dark, ambient, likely to put you into a "nesting" mood . . . a great place to cuddle up with friends and lovers for a laid-back night out.

There's a 2-drink minimum for all shows, and drink prices are pretty standard for Manhattan. I've heard some people whine about the drink minimum, but seriously, if you're not going to drink at LEAST 2 drinks on a night out in NYC, you really should just stay home.
