Smells like cheese. The first thing that hits you when you enter Artisanal is the overwhelming aroma of good, ripe cheeses -- a bit intimidating for the uninitiated, but complete nirvana for people serious about their cheese. No matter the hour, the dining room always seems full and for good reason. The food is consistently delicious, the portions won't leave you hungry, the service is reliable, helpful (if not a bit serious), the wine list is varied and reasonably priced, and the cheese, ahh yes, the cheese. There are some fine choices among the appetizers, but you owe it to yourself to try a proper fondue at least once. While even the mildest of Artisanal's fondues are a bit strong for the average American palate, if you're really into cheese you'll enjoy the experience. Take your time dipping and enjoying with a good starter wine. There's a nice variety of main courses and I've yet to be disappointed. Kudos to the kitchen for figuring out what works, keeping it simple, and allowing the fresh ingredients and seasonings to speak for themselves. There's no pretense or over-reaching. I feel as though I can order anything on the menu with absolute confidence. For a treat, eschew the sweets on the dessert menu and summon the fromagier (cheese expert) to assist in choosing an assortment of fine cheeses. Enjoy!

When visiting NYC in early Oct. I had the pleasure of dining at Artisanal and the food was absolutely wonderful! The fondue was amazing and a HUGE amount. We ordered the beef tips along with it and the steak was cooked to perfection! The artisanal blend fondue was an amazing compliment to the beef.

For an entree I had the vension and all I can say is "WOW!" I left very pleased with EVERYTHING! The wine and the food was great.

I wouldn't suggest this restaurant for those who are looking for a quiet and romantic evening but if you're just looking to kick back, relax, and enjoy a good meal, this is definitely a place to go!

A Barrage of Fromage: Artisanal will always keep us coming back. Very reasonable prices and a great, varied menu with excellent daily specials combined with a comprehensive and reasonably-priced wine list come together to satisfy the palate and purse every time. The quality of the food is superb. We started with a basket of gougeres and an excellent bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon priced under $30. We then savored the parmesan gnocchi and then had the hanger steak (cooked to perfection, perfect marbling) with pommes frites. We also had the Tuna Nicoise lightly rolled in cracked pepper corn, sea salt and herbs and then pan seared. Out of this world. We finished off with a cheese plate and an apple tort both of which were great. Excellent bread is just one more indication that this restaurant is committed to your having an excellent dining experience. In addition, the physical plant is above par. An exceptionally clean restaurant with high ceilings that is well ventilated, appropriate lighting, interesting décor right down to the floor tile reminiscent of a Parisian bistro, superb wait-staff the one of NYC’s best selections of cheeses. The staff is well scrubbed, polite, professional and attentive. There are no gimmicks at Artisanal; just excellent food, wine, ambiance and staff. It is an excellent choice for any occasion and highly recommended.
