I had an opportunity to dine at Per Se recently. It was a wonderful experience. When you have all of the elements of a successful restaurant in place: attentive staff, the finest ingredients available and a comfortable dining room; and then you add one of the world's top chefs, you're in for a wonderful culinary experience. The flavors and pairings on each plate were as close to perfect as one could expect. For me, a couple of highlights were the "Oysters and Pearls" first course and the grilled pave of Kindai bluefin tuna (like no tuna I'd ever had before). I kept thinking that at some point one of the courses was bound to be mediocre or sub-par, but every course turned out to be exceptional. The wine pairings recommended to us also enhanced the overall experience.
Other than the exorbitant cost, there's nothing I could honestly complain about.
I read some of the other postings and I must say that if you're expecting to stuff your face with huge portions of food as you would at a steak house, then please don't bother with Per Se. Per Se is about finesse, flavors and textures -- things you must take time to savor. That said, I was pleasantly full at meal's end and didn't feel like I could eat another bite. And I never thought I would enjoy grapefruit ice cream, but I favored it even more than the chocolate mousse bombe that it was paired with (for those of you who think these two things would be a terrible pairing, I was of the same mind until I actually tried it -- wowsa!).
One of the best French restaurants.: This is what new French food supposed to be. They use alot ingredients that you don't normally see in the French restaurants in France. They are also lighter than most traditional FR. (Traditional FR are usually too heavy for my taste.) Every course was delicately done and I enjoy everyone of them. It would be hard to go to other French restaurants after you have tried Per se. The service was good but they told us to go around for the bathroom because Robert DeNiro was there that night [sigh...]
I was not impressed at all: There is something to be said about a $225 meal that mostly consists of rolls. We had the tasting menu. you literally have maybe one tablespoon of food per course. Ironically - the rolls that they pass out between each course were bigger than the actual meal course. The food was good, but the portions were entirely too small to really enjoy. for $225 per person just for food... i expect to be blown away. Unless you're on a corporate tab, please spend your money elsewhere. I was really really disappointed. REALLLY disappointed. There are so many other BETTER places to dine... and to get an actual meal.
