To all who have had home cooked gumbo from the South, This Place SUCKS. I went in expecting some good gumbo. What I got was bland soup with two shrimps and a little rice. There was no crab and small amounts of chicken. The server wasn't the best or worst. Apparently you can't do substatutions with the side orders without being charged for it. I thought that was pretty lame. My Advice to this establishment is to get some people from the Carribean to work in your kitchen so that maybe you can get your flavor profiles down. To all who enjoy authentic food, STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.
I've been going to Celestineâs for years, even before it was at Voodoo Lounge. During a time that it was nestled in a dark, cramped location that looked similar to a closet. I absolutely loved the food and listed it as my top restaurant that I have ever been to. The bread was fresh and the gumbo and shrimp sandwich was excellent. Recently, I have been there a few times and have left out been impressed with the food but disappointed by the service. My husband and I are young and urban from New York with a long history of eating Dominican and Jamaican dishes. The last time we went, my water was not refilled in the hour and a half we were there, while we watch many others looking parched as they hesitated to take another bite of the spicy Jerk Chicken. I will give Celestineâs a 10 for taste but a 3 for service.
Food was great but the service was definetly sub-par. Lunch time on a Friday, not overly busy. Took forever to get our food and check. Then she brought back the wrong credit card, then I found out that I had been charged twice and 2 different amounts. I just expect a little better service at lunchtime as most people are expected back to work at some point. I will go back because we really enjoyed the food and it is unique.
