Reminded of venues in Greenwich Village in NYC, I sat until very late at my first evening at "Blue" at 650 Congress Street, Portland, ME. Go! Go back. Some of the best live music to be heard in Portland, ME can be found at Port City BLUE downtown. An old guard jazz aficionado, I treasure venues that showcase talent and Port City BLUE has all the elements.
Menu-wise the owners have picked a number of items perennially favored - some light pasta dishes - good meatballs (I tried to slip one in and asked the owner for his secret recipe... but he was stone cold sober... I got nowhere)... antipasto, cheeses. The wine list is a nice assortment - same for the beers/lagers - and beverages include specialty sodas. Good bread. All in all - all you really need for an evening glued to your chair - listening to fabulous music.
Dunno what the one negative reviewer here was speaking about - but they cannot be a music person such as I am.
Support the arts. Apparently the owners have that figured out. I loved the place and I've seen lots - including venues in London such as Ronnie Scott's and nearly staying the night in venues in the Village in NY. BLUE is wonderful. Kudos to the owners. They are caring with the musicians and I thank them for that.
Based on a five star scale:
Food - ***** delicious, satisfying & fairly priced
Music - ***** you need to go to NYC to find this kind of quality musical venue
Drink - **** there's no liquor but the beer and wine selection is quite nice
Staff - ***** attentive, subdued, cordial, professional
Ambience - **** it gets a bit crowded at times but hey, we're all friends at Blue
Patrons - ***** quiet, attentive to the entertainment, well behaved, mature...this is not a kiddie bar
In summary, if you wanna rock this is not your place but if you want some of the best music north of the Big Apple in a comfortable, casual, urban setting Blue is for you. Check it out.
Horrible: Stuck up customers and staff. Too many hipster/wannabes, if you disagree with this...thats you!!!!

This nightclub/eatery is one of the gems of Portland, Maine. I LOVE this place!! Fabulous music, scrumptious nibbles and a great selection of beers and wines. I do wish they'd bring back Stella in those sexy glasses but the selection of libations is more than adequate. I have a feeling that our anonymous friend above is satisfied calling Bud in a can and Fritos a good night out. The staff could not be more receptive to their customer's needs...just try some of Barry's homemade hummous and you'll see what I mean. From a musical point of view there's not a better venue in Portland if you want a relaxing evening of quality tune-age (that's a Hipster-wannabe word pal). People actually listen to what is coming from the tiny stage and I've never had to talk "over" the music. As a matter of fact, one tends to converse in hushed tones because the music is so good. That must be Local-Yahoo's problem; he's used to screaming FREEBIRD at the top of his lungs while he scans the room for his next sexual tryst. Hey buddy, there's a little watering hole down on Portland Street called Ricky's...I think you'd fit right in. Peace
