If fish and chips and $14 entrees are your idea of pretentious and overpriced, then you must not get out very much. The menu, if anything, is simple. A two-sided piece of paper with a handful of sandwiches and a good selection of entrees. Reasonably priced. Good service. Great food (one of the best desserts I've ever had!). If a high school home economics student made my dinner, please hire him/her.
First off....the place won "Best of Philly" for 2007 That should tell you something right there!
Its a traditional English Pub tucked away in a TINY crossroad village of Chatam among rolling hills of foxhunting country. Very complete website!! Our family and friends LOVE going here!! Everything is flavorful and delicious!!! Families and children welcomed. Only downside is no reservations and service can be slow when it is crowded but hey, relaxing and hanging out is part of the fun...especially in winter when the fireplace is going! Longest we've had to wait was about 30 minutes when its was really crowded.
Traditional fare includes Bangers& Mash, Bubble & Sqeak, Scotch Egg, Toad-in-the-Hole, Welsh Rarebit and (of course) Fish & Chips as well as innovative entrees using local organic ingredients including bison. Great selection of ales! Wed nights can be crowded during playback of the week's races during the hunt cup season. Quizzo on Thursdays. Prices are low to moderate. Lunch $3-9 Dinner $9-27. CLOSED TUESDAYS!
VERY scenic drive around the area! Near Unionville, PA home of many of the USA's top horse trainers, riders and owners many of which frequent the pub. 10 min drive from tourist attraction of Longwood Gardens, PA. 30-45 min from Wilmington, DE, 60 min from Philadelphia, PA. Near the Lancaster County border for Amish tourism.
The best part of visiting this restautant is the drive through the beautiful countryside to arrive there. The inn had atmosphere, but the food was the most pretentious and overpriced that I have ever seen. I had bangers and mash with my ale and I swear that a better meal could have been prepared by a high school home economics course. The potatoes were instant and the sausages were tiny, tasteless things that made Jones frozen sausages look good. My wife had fish and chips and she said it wasn't half bad.

Not sure the reviewer went to the right restaurant. While ANY restaurant can have an off night on food quality or service, but I've never had a bad meal at The WhipTavern. I've been going there weekly for over two years since it opened. I know the chef and he cares about the quality and presentation of the food. As with any good restuarant, if you have an issue with your meal, bring it to the staff's attention. They will make it right. I've always found it to be a good value. You have a full price range from sandwiches to full entrees with good value over the whole spectrum. The potatoes are hand peeled every day. I love the horseradish flavored preparation. The place is small, so get there before 6 if you don't want a long wait. They are adding an outside deck at the rear.
Some of the comments by opedphil are just dead wrong. They NEVER serve instant potatoes although with some dishes they use of touch of truffle oil...perhaps the reviewer mistook the taste of that for instant??? I have been going there also ever since they opened and in addition to knowing the chef and many customers, I also know many of the people they buy their local produce from. I also have never seen any tiny sausages come out of that kitchen either on my own, my friends, or anybody elses I happened to notice. In fact, sometimes I have trouble finishing it. I think the meals are an excellent value and very competatively priced. My favorites are the steamed mussels and the parchment wrapped seafood selection (which occasionaly changes) As the comment above by bolderdesignsi suggested, if he had a problem, he should have said something to the staff. No mention was made that he tried to do so. The Whip staff always trys their best to "make things right". I can't wait for the outside patio by the stream to open!
