san mateo has some the best japanese food in the bay area. hotaru for entrees, joy sushi for sushi and himawari for ramen.
himawari has more variety of ramen than other places. the place attracts a hip, young and friendly crowd. it gets somewhat crowded in between movie times due to a theater nearby. other than that, i would suggest giving them a try if you're in the area.
My new favorite Ramen place in the Peninsula. I frequent many of the popular joints and most of their soups are very salty.
The soup base (shio at least) at Himawari is lighter and has good flavor.
The noodle is also chewy and fresh.
Many reviewers complained about the noise. Things must have changed because I barely notice the music. The restaurant is clean, well lit and not cramped. You also don't have to wait forever like at other places.
I've got to give Himawari 5 stars. This is a GREAT place to take a date, there is nothing bad on the menu, and there are some treasures like the Spicy Ramen ("Tan Tan Men"). They do seem to have turned the music down a bit and they play "chill" style lounge music which I find very hip and relaxing. The salmon fried rice is very good and comes with a nice little seaweed clear broth soup to help it go down. Let's face it, you can't go to the same Ramen place every weekend and still enjoy it. This is a good alternate- without the crowds, and the bigger menu,. quiet, and cool music make it stand apart. So even though we love Kahoo and Santa, Himawari is also one of our regular places.
