The atmosphere was good but the food and service was not. Just a another fancy restaurant pretends to provide authentic Mexican cuisine.
I often go to Wichita on business, so I eat out a lot while I am there. I have tried many different places and many dishes. My favorite thing to eat is at Abuelos. It is the pescado guerrero. I am not much of a fish eater, but this stuff is tasty. As for the restaraunt itself, it is always clean and the the staff is friendly. I highly recommend eating the pescado, it is tasty.
Ate there once. It was mediocre, maybe slightly above average for Wichita's Mexican food -- which is pretty horrible, actually (Cheese Whiz capital of the world). I've lived in California, Texas, New Mexico, and Wichita. I got here as soon as I could, but I must warn you that, for all their endearing qualities, the natives here don't know a good restaurant from a bad one. It's just not their thing.
Until 25 years ago, there were only a half dozen non-fast-food, non-coffee-shop restaurants in town. This is the home of Pizza Hut, and fast food rules. That's not all bad, by the way. I like this town and the people a bunch, and the fast food often meets my needs quite well.
Nevertheless, Abuelo's is little more than a nice looking facility with above average prices and roughly average food at best. If you want truly good Mexican food, avoid this place. Frankly, I can't recommend a Mexican place in Wichita. If you want real greasy slop, though, try Connie's on north Broadway -- one of Wichita's oldest Mexican places. It's survival all these years is a true mystery. It supports my worry that much of Wichita's Mexican food is served up by transplants from the back streets of Mexico.

This person obviously has little or no knowledge about restaurants. There are 100's of great and not so great places to eat here. One I would recommend is La Chinta on Broadway. They are right about Connies though. It was delicious 15 years ago. Now not so good.
