I love this little place!!!: First of, I'm not Japanese. I don't even know how authentic ramen is supposed to taste like. But I love eating and I eat out right around 365 times a year. Because I eat out so often, and I'm a pretty darn good cook too, I can be quite picky about what and where I eat. I guess you can say I hold pretty high standards when it comes to food. Yet, I like this restaurant very very much. So, when I read the bad reviews on Tokyo Ramen, I felt I just have to put in my two cents.
Ok, here it goes ... I believe this restaurant is owned and run by Chinese people -- not Japanese like the restaurant name suggests. In fact, I doubt if anyone of the staff has ever been to Tokyo or even Japan. This should explain why the food aren't authentic Japanese. I'm sure if you're a die-hard fan of Japanese cuisine, you'll likely be upset because most of the food here taste more like Chinese food. Again, I'm not Japanese. I'm not Chinese either. I'm ... um ... "American" (how about that?) To me, food is ... food. I don't care if the dish is Japanese or Chinese or Mexican, if it tastes yummy then I'll put it in my tummy. So, if you can ignore the nationality part, chances are you'll like this wonderful little place. I have tried pretty much everything on the restaurant's rich menu, and I haven't found anything I hate yet. The presentation of the food is also nice. The service is swift and friendly. The price is extremely affordable. The only thing I don't like about this restaurant is its "cash only" policy. And perhaps the owner should change the restaurant name to "Beijing Ramen" too ;-)
Disappointment: After reading a review of Tokyo Ramen at another web site, we were excited to try it. The noodles are supposedly hand pulled and fresh.
We ordered the following dishes:
1. Shoyu Ramen;
2. Tonkotsu Ramen;
3. Chicken Fried rice (without the fish eggs);
4. Pao Bao with shallots.
The noodles were indeed hand pulled. The problem was that none of the two ramen dishes we ordered tasted like Japanese Ramen. They looked like ramen but tasted nothing like ramen. It was as if the owners have seen pictures of ramen but have never tasted it themselves. The soup had very little pork taste. It seemed to taste more like some kind of Chinese dish than Japanese ramen. Also, those fresh hand pulled noodles had absolutely no flavor. I can taste more flavor in a package of Top Ramen. Very disappointing.
The fried rice was good. It was a Chinese styled fried rice. However, we did not come to this restaurant to have fried rice.
The Pao Bao was ok. Sort of like green onion pancakes at other
