We live in nearby Southport and happened upon Genki while in Wilmington. Loved it. Ordered the sushi and sashimi platter and was very pleased with the quality of the fish - SO tender and flavorful - as well as the presentation of our dishes. Waitstaff was attentive and informative. I ordered wine and my husband ordered warm saki and both were very good and suited the meal well. There are many places in Wilmington for average sushi but Genki's quality and influence on more traditional Japanese cuisine was impressive. We will return.

My favorite spot in town for basic sushi. Tempura Tuna melts in your mounth. The decor is basic too, not a trendy place, but Always delicious. Best to go Tuesday - Thursday, usually too busy for me on Fri. & Sat., They are closed on Sunday & Mondays. Only the owner rolls the sushi, and it takes a while (45 min+) to get your order on busy nights. No Bar & Poor wine selection, but has several Asian beers.

I wish there were half stars to add here, but I couldn't go as high on the scale as 4 out of 5. 3.5 would be closer to my opinion.

My wife and I visited Genki on a Friday evening around 8 PM and the place wasn't even half full. Not necessarily a red flag, but also not a huge stamp of approval either. The decor is fine, and better than many Japanese places I've been on the east coast. The waiter did a fine job, and our booth was clean and uncluttered.

As for the dinner, I'll start with a couple of the not so good things and then end this on a positive note. My hot green tea was pale and flavorless. My wife's cola was fine. The miso was a bit too cloudy, and had way too many onions and pieces of tofu. The miso was also served with a big ol' won ton soup spoon in it, which would be a no-no in Japan. The Sunomono salad was almost all cucumber, but the dressing was tasty, and the squid in it was good. I also ordered the grilled squid apetizer, and here's where the positives begin. This was actually done really well, because it is such a simple dish. The key is to get a grilled flavor, but to not overcook the squid. The grilled squid here at Genki was nice and tender, and still had the grilled flavor. We had a spider roll, which was good, but pretty run of the mill. The tempura roll was nothing spectacular either, but it was made well and again wasn't overcooked in the least which is easy to do if they're not paying attention in the kitchen. The Maguro (tuna) nigiri was fine, but could have used a bit more wasabi for my liking. The Saba (mackerel) was great. The rice used in all the sushi was good, and not overly seasoned or dressed as you might find in other places. The prices were all very reasonable.

I hope I don't sound too critical, as I'd happily return to Genki Sushi, I just hope they find a better source for their green tea, and maybe pull back some on the miso paste in their soup and perhaps use just a bit more Hon-Dashi. One more suggestion for the miso would be to only add 2 to 3 small blocks of tofu and about half as many onion as they do at the moment.

All that said, I would recommend the place to friends.
