The new owners have done a great job of sprucing up the restaurant. The meat is still the leanest in town, portions are good, and both sauces (sweet and hot) are tasty. Prices are very affordable. Beans/slaw/fries are good (I haven't tried any of the other sides) - ask for "extra crispy" fries if you want them well-done. Service has improved considerably, and although I don't drink "sweet tea" myself, many of my dining companions appreciate being able to pick regular tea or sweet tea. Definitely worth the trip.
This place used to be the best kept BBQ secret in KC. They may not have the absolute best BBQ in town, but it was off the beaten path and very affordable. The meat is always good. The service is iffy but when you are stuck employing primarily teenagers, you are going to have to expect that. The fries change from day to day. One day, they may be crispy and hot, the next, they might be a bit soggy. But in the end, there are not many places where you can feed a family of 4 for around $20.
The real downside came when I heard that the place was being sold. That never seems to be good news. Well, it wasn't. As of this week, they have raised their prices. The new owner seems nice enough but I am noticing that it seems there are smaller portions. In this day of dollar menus and free meals for kids, this is a bad move on the part of a non-chain owner in my opinion. Either raise your price or reduce portions, don't do both. I hope that they at least improve the service. I also hope that the few good folks that they had there will stick around. It is nice to have them know you when you walk in. But is isn't nice to not get a refill through out your entire dinner.
All in all, I am going to take a break from this place for a bit and spread my BBQ money around the town a bit until the new owners get the hang of things.
A little bit out of the way but oh so worth the trip! Try the brownies (burnt ends) if they have any left. The slab of ribs looks like the ones on the Flintstone's. It's all good but ask for an extra plate because yours will be so full that you'll like a little extra room.
