Went to the Blue Claw as we were passing thru Portsmouth on a nice, summer day. Waitstaff was OK, but now I know why there were hardly any patrons-lobster rolls were $18, seemed old and were completely tasteless. It might as well have been plastic. In fact with the exception of the french fries and chips, everything else was tasteless (we also ordered clams, etc.). We only ordered the lobster rolls because the waitress gushed about how great they were. In Maine we can get fresh, GOOD lobster rolls for around $8-$15! Very limited, boring menu-plus the waitstaff told us some of those very few menu items weren't even available! Blue Claw is too pricey for outdoor, sub-par food with plastic utensils!! I'd stay far, far away!!
Do not get the "Maryland Lump Crab Cakes". I don't think there was any crab meat much less lump crab meat. They were at least 75% filler. No taste of crab at all.
While our service was good, a couple with two very small children were at their table when we arrived and were still there when we were leaving because their food took so long. They were not happy and had to have their food wrapped up so they could concentrate on feeding their children who were acting like hungry very young children. We will not go there again.
Would definitely go back!: Perfect location by the river. Relaxed atmosphere. Dinner was served on plasticware, and we sat on plastic chairs under sun umbrellas. Nice, but laid back. Lobster bisque was FANTASTIC!!! Try the free sample, you will be won over!!
