The BEST flavored coffee around! Hands down. The owners are wonderful people that are active in their community and raise money for animal rescue and send coffee to our troops overseas. I often drive out of my way to get their coffee instead of the many Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks that surround us.
The best coffee around: After discovering Moon Doggie Coffee Roasters about a little more than a year ago, Starbucks coffee now tastes burnt and muddy to me.
This was not always the case. I was a satisfied Starbucks customer for a long time when I spied Moon Doggie's small ad in my local paper, proudly trumpeting the fact that a portion of their profits are funneled into a local bassett hound rescue group. Even though I'm a cat person at heart, I like to support anyone who does something nice for animals of any species. My first thought was that I would buy a cup of coffee every so often when I was in the area, but it would never replace the bold Starbuck's coffee that I loved.
My first trip to Moon Doggie changed the way I think of coffee. Forever. Upon walking in the front door I sensed that this was no cookie-cutter, dime a dozen coffee shop. Almost as if stepping into a time machine, I was transported back to a coffee/soda shop sometime around 1960. A large photo of Albuquerque's Rt. 66 hangs on the wall to the left, showing the road's "wall-to-wall" motels, greasy spoons, and other establishments designed to entice drivers to spend some time, and money, with them. To the right I found an array of retro cookbooks, mugs, French presses, and other interesting items that make terrific gifts.
Moon Doggie is more than a coffee shop; it's a place where you can sit down with a latte, smoothie or hot chocolate, and read the newspaper, catch up on the local happenings as told by the group of loyal regulars who saunter in and out for their daily cup of joe, or just savor one of the best cups of coffee you've had in a long, long time.
Ah yes, the coffee. After all, that's what makes one coffee shop stand out from the rest. Thanks to Moon Doggie I now know what good coffee is supposed to taste like. The secret is in the quality of the beans and the attention to detail of the person roasting them. Moon Doggie imports only the highest grade coffees - many organic and shade-grown for minimal environmental impact - and roasts them on premesis in small batches for freshness and meticulous quality control (I know of only one other place in Bergen County that roasts its own beans). The result is a plethora of exceptional coffees from around the world, each bringing a unique taste experience. For non-connissuers, Moon Doggie has familiar staples such as Colombian and Brazillian coffees that offer a familiar taste in a higher quality, fresher, cleaner version. All water used at Moon Doggie is filtered to remove impurities and to provide the best tasting beverages possible. Even the water that goes into the ice machine is filtered.
Moon Doggie also has a large assortment of freshly baked muffins and cookies, and even a few cookie and snack options for vegans and strict vegetarians. Gelato and sorbet is available to cool you off in the hot summer months. And to remain true to it's mission of helping bassett hounds find good permanent homes, Moon Doggie also sells a variety of doggie cookies and treats, and some things for cats too.
Much more than the best coffee you've had in a long time, Moon Doggie Coffee Roasters is the best kept secret in Bergen County that is well worth going out of your way for. I have not been to Starbucks in over a year.
Moon Doggie, that's good coffee!: It might be the wonderful aroma that brings you in the door of Moon Doggie Cafe in Maywood, but it doesn't end there. Donna Funk and her husband Bob's unique shop has something for everyone. Want to grab a quick bite? They've got it. Want a yummy treat to go with their out of this world coffee? They've got that, too! Need an original gift item or a "funky" button? This is the place. The best part of Moon Doggie, however, just might be their devotion to Basset rescue. Just say the word and part of your purchase price will find it's way to houndie rescue. Don't live in "Jersey?" It's worth the trip...for the coffee and the company!
