We visited Village Haven on 6/13/09 at 4PM. We were promply seated. Our first impression was VERY NICE!!! The room and atmosphere were elegant! The server "Ashley" was very friendly and prompt. Now for the food: We got the ALL U CAN EAT CHICKEN DINNER for 9.95 per person. The Salad, Fries, Pasta, Rolls and Chicken were OUTSTANDING!!! The chicken was so moist, it melted in your mouth. I found that you can request all white meat for $1.75 per person more. I said yes without reservation. Believe me, It's worth the extra money. The desert came with a cup of Hershy's Ice Cream that was included in the price. We also ordered 3 Cokes and a coffee. Our bill for our experience was under $33.00.
The restaurant was clean but dimly lit. It has a fully stocked bar but beer is in bottles only. No beer on tap. The bathrooms were spotless and there was ample parking. Reservations can be made for as little as a party of 2 people. Ashley informed me that peek time is about 6PM in the summer. So, go between 4-5PM to get in without waiting. Village Haven is located at 90 School St. North Smithfield (Forestdale) Rhode Island.
My rating for Village Haven is 90 out of 100 points. A TRULY EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE!!!!
My girlfriend and I went to the Village Haven after reading good reviews about it on here. Its a shame that we were both sorely disappointed. The atmosphere was quaint, but I knew something was wrong when we were seated for about five minutes and had no one approach us for service. My girlfriend had to get a bus boy to fetch us a waitress.
As I started to take in the environment, I realized how dead the place was for a Friday night (we went at about 8:30PM and there were about ten other people). The wait staff was moving incredibly slowly. I helped myself to the Italian wedding from the crock pot. It was luke warm and had no taste. The meatballs tasted like plastic.
Then we got our salads, which was about the only good part of the meal (that we ate) & bread. I don't understand why their cinnamon buns are such a big deal. No, I didn't try them, but cinnamon buns are a breakfast / desert thing. Why would I want a cinnamon bun with my steak or salad? And why do they mix cinnamon buns with regular buns? My girlfriend had to ask twice to get regular buns. By this time our waitress was getting frustrated (we were being polite, but we were frustrated as well) and after practically throwing a spoon in front of my girlfriend for her soup (which she said was overly seasoned), and giving us wet buns, we left.
Our service was deplorable and I'm sure the food wasn't much better. Leave your cinnamon buns for breakfast service. When we told the waitress that our buns were wet she rolled her eyes, took the bowl away, and returned with the same bowl with a liner of wax paper in it. That's when we threw in the towel and walked out.
I don't claim to be a food critic, or someone with an above average pallet, but the Village Haven is a shoddy place with poor service.
I love this place more than Wrights chicken any day of the year. The atmosphere is ok but the food is excellent! Been there many times over the years and I am going tonight. Must have extra cinnamon rolls.
