The Art Deco theater and commercial complex was designed by architects Krokyn & Brown with five storefronts, backed by a grand auditorium. The Grand was originally designed as a movie theater with a seating capacity of 750 and remained quite popular until the advent of the television. In the last few years before it was finally rescued by Harris Strong in 1975, The Grand was used to stage a variety of events, including rock 'n' roll concerts and boxing matches, in an effort to attract a larger audience, but to no avail. Upon purchase by the Hancock County Auditorium Associates, the failing movie theater was renovated, restored and given a new lease on life as a non-profit performing arts center. The historic theater now hosts a vibrant and varied cultural program with concerts, live theater, standup comedy shows, film screenings and HD broadcasts of the Met Opera.
