East Bay Seido, at the Berkeley dojo, offers traditional and safe karate, at very competitive tuition, for the whole family, at any age that can understand directions: An excellent school to learn karate basics and a good school to polish your foundations. Strengths: ~ Zazen class -- Zen sitting meditation with no religious overtones or content. ~ Strenuous -- Rigorous holistic workouts (please get extra gi as you will sweat early and often). ~ Safe -- Strong emphasis in creating a safe space for students to practice without the fear of serious injury. ~ Fun. Challenges: ~ Sparring (Point karate or "tag" style) is a part of the syllabus from the green belt and above, at the 4th Kyu grade (could take 18 months or more: You are here to learn the Seido program, prior non-Seido experiences may not hasten the time requirements) and sparring class is once a week, only on Sundays (but not on the 1st Sundays) with certain techniques and targets (face and legs) excluded. ~ This is a "stand-up" school, striking above the belt only. Falls, rolls, grabs, or take-downs are not among the basics that get repetition. ~ Infrequent in-class focus-bags or heavy-bag work for power and accuracy conditioning for self-defense. I recommend East Bay Seido Karate for its excellent instructors, honorable classmates, and vigorous workouts to build a foundation for the "stand-up" aspects of martial arts. However, if you're looking for more focus on practical self-defense, "fight" conditioning, and the real confidence to manage fear and thus to deter violence and do not mind having to heal from inevitable occasional injuries then you may need to look further. Seido Karate dojo is a special place where you can begin to learn to answer these questions.

This dojo is really great! I have been learning Karate for several years now. When we moved to the Bay Area, I checked out several dojos. Although Seido was a different style than the one I had done before, I was instantly impressed with the philosophy of Seido Karate. It is not so much about physical strength, although this is helpful, and it is not all about great technique, although good technique is of course a big focus, but it is mostly about developing a personality of respect and responsibility towards others. It is a great community to be part of!

East Bay Seido is an amazing dojo! They teach traditional Japanese Karate which blends the learning of techniques and forms, meditation, self defense and an all around great work out. I'm probably twenty pounds lighter since starting my training. Senpai Todd is a great teacher and spends much of his class and spare time helping new students. In addition you become part of a global organization and family with dojos around the world. If you're in New York, weve got a dojo; Austraila, dojo; Japan, San Antonio, Los Angeles and many more cities all have dojos which will be happy to see you if you want to train while on a trip or if you move. I myself have trained at three different dojos. They're all great and you feel like family as soon as you walk in the door. If you want to lose weight, get in shape, learn self defense, feel connected to a group of wonderful people, learn a martial art and live near Berkeley, you should visit East Bay Seido on Bonita (off of University Avenue) a few blocks from the Berkeley BART. Look for the orange plum blossom emblem on the sidewalk. There are children's classes, evening classes and Sunday classes to accommodate busy work schedules.
