Has gotten some good local reviews but wonder what they paid for them. Service poor, kitchen dirty, food unorginal attempts at trendy.
I read the reviews of this restaurant and decided to give it a try on my first visit to Des Moines, and I was very disappointed. It was a Tuesday lunch time, there were only one waiter and one cashier in the restaurant. Nobody greeted us and we had to help ourselves with the menu. The tapas were ok priced, but we just ordered two mentioned by other reviewers: the crab cake and Seafood Brie Encroute, and also got a cranberry brisket sandwich just in case the tapas are not enough. Well, the crab cake was just mediocre, nothing special, dnefinitely not worth the near $10, encroute was simply puff pastry, I can neither taste nor see any seafood. Cranberry brisket is ok, but the bun really betrayed itâs quality, Iâd say Quiznoâs sub is 10 times better. The room really has a stuffy feel, bad ventilation, the cooking smoke from the kitchen filled the whole restaurant, my eyes were watering from the smoke, and my hair and clothes were also completely soaked with the creasy smell. A sub-par overpriced eatery. Not recommended!
Carry on at the Continental: A great place to have some conversation and cuisine at the same time. The small plate appetizer menu is a real treat. The happy hour time is a great time to go and tryout the appetizers and at a great price too. The Olive and Cheese Empanadillas are a must try and are delicious. Oh, you must have a couple of orders of the new potatoes. For all you seafood and meat eaters....Crabcakes and the Meatballs. Unfortunately I think it was the last of the run of the Ameretto Cheesecake which was out of this world.
A relaxing and cozy atmosphere that makes it a great place to take your unfinished business and carry on or meet a few friends and have a start to a great evening.
