If you think Jim Gould's is a little snooty, you should try their breakfast or lunch. I've never had a bad meal there at either of those times. Sure, all of the servers are wearing aprons and pressed shirts, but if you can get past that, I think you'll enjoy the food. The tilapia sandwich on their lunch menu is quite tasty. I think they do buffets at lunch and on Sundays for brunch, but I can't really speak to that. I prefer to order off the menu, mostly because I am lazy and I like having the food brought straight to me when it is ready :)
Wow This place is awful. The guy server, with glasses, couldn't even explain the whipped potatoes. There sure aren't many people there for a Saturday night. Gee I wonder why. ---Poor service-snooty owners and dumb staff. The food was cooked to temp either.
Bottom Line: Jim Gould's staff and management think of themselves as a high class, upscale restaurant. Basically they think they are God's gift to Champaign-Urbana. That's hardly the case.
When you order anything that can be cooked to a different degree, they always mess it up. I asked for the salmon to be cooked well done since the last time I ordered, it was rare and room temperature. When I received my "well done" salmon it was again, rare and room temperature. They also forgot the baked potato...which was surprisingly the only OTHER thing that was supposed to be on the plate. I don't know what kind of "chefs" they have working, but they are obviously untalented.
The staff is also rude and uncaring. They disappear for long periods of time and avoid you when you try to get their attention. When you finally flag them down, they take a ridiculous amount of time to bring a drink refill or extra bread. Things that should take less than a minute to do. This, coupled with horrible chefs, made my last visit with some friends who wanted to go there 2 hours long. 1 hour and 15 mins to get the main course, 30 MINUTES to get the dessert!
They hire some most gifted (sarcasm) hostesses with great (sarcasm) customer service. On Valentines day with my GF, we asked for a booth so we could have more privacy. It was early, around 4:30pm, so the restaurant was less than half full. They proceeded to sit us next to another couple in a booth/table combination. However, I was less than a foot away from the next couple. The bench was around 20 feet long and had little tables sitting in front of it. So one person got to sit on the 20 foot bench next to everyone, and the other got to sit in a chair across the table. It was the most unromantic dinner imaginable. The other couple couldnt believe it either. The hostess could care less and probably did it on purpose because we requested something.
So here it is in a nutshell:
Food is ok, service takes forever and when you get it you get rude and untalented, atmosphere is decent, and the bread is amazing (when you get it).
I've been there a total of five times now and it gets worse every time I go there. I havn't gone there by choice after the second time.
